Wailin’ On Palin

So, as you may have heard, Sarah Palin was in town for the opening game of the Flyers’ season, and if the media elites are to be believed (they’re not!), things didn’t go so well. But, then again, maybe they did! Because, after bumping around the Internet today searching for Palin protest photos in Philadelphia, it became pretty apparent: the boos cascading down on Ms. Youbetchya at Wachovia Saturday were practically a vacation compared to the hoots and hollers of derision she was met with around the city. I mean, at least she got to be around the sport she loves, ya know? Below you’ll find links to different Flickrs around the city who snapped photos of all the Palin hate going on around town in all its hate-filled haterade. Give them a thorough look see, Philadelphia. Then ask yourselves if perhaps you didn’t go a bit far. Can you imagine how upset you’d be if Barack was met in, say, Alabama with even 1/10 the vitriol reserved for Palin here in Philly over the weekend? Full. Scale. Riots. You should be ashamed.

BWHAHAHA. Just kidding. Give yourselves a well deserved pat on the back.

All-in-all… the protest in front of the Bellevue on Oct. 11th wasn’t all “riotous.” That is, until the group “ACT UP: Philadelphia” showed up with smoke and bullhorns. It was a mostly quiet, peaceful affair as this video may shed light on:

Thanks for crediting me (Vincent Brown / VisualSense) as a photographer at that event.

I think Sarah Palin’s policies are revolting and worthy of condemnation, but I don’t think invoking sexism — which is precisely what these shirts do — to get one’s point across is at all useful. I took a picture of these folks as well, and then blogged about my decision to take that picture down from Flickr:

I think Sarah Palin is a dangerous woman who shouldn’t be let anywhere near Washington. But demeaning women in the process is just vile. I was never a Hillary Clinton supporter, but just think if she had been the nominee and similar shirts had been made. (For the record, I’m not so hot on Obama either.)

The various discussions that begin with, “But there were women wearing these shirts too!!!1!!11!” are just an example of how insidious internalized oppression is. Misogyny isn’t sexy.

    Go Ivan!

I agree with Ivan and Tara. It’s just such a stupidly low blow that it makes the wearer of the shirt really look like an asshole. In fact, they really are. Totally unnecessary.

    But she is a cunt.

What’s a cun? If it’s supposed to say “cunt’” then I don’t get the sexism. I know a lot of men that are cunts. If it said she was a dick, I wouldn’t, as a man, be offended. I’d figure she was a dick in some peoples eyes.
