You Need Not Worry About Steven Wells In This Awful Economy, He Will Make His Money

You can worry about newspapers and charities and maybe even restaurants, but, in this awful economy, you need not worry about Steven Wells. He will make his money. Take for instance his latest article for the Guardian UK, which, presumably, they payed him to write. Printed today it’s about a two year old dance party here in town called England Belongs To Twee co-run by sometimes-PW contributor and all around swell guy Mike McKee. The party features a mix of Oi! and Twee music which Wells, for the purposes of his article, has dubbed “Twoi,” which terrifies him because it it “real. Very real.” Only it’s not real at all, no more than a dance party featuring music from the ’80s and ’90s could spur a musical genre called “8090″ or a disco featuring…eh, you get the picture. Anyway, keep on pimpin’, Wells, you pimp! You’re like the 50 Cent of journalism.

Our Music Issue

You may (or may not) have noticed PW’s Oct. 29th issue is dedicated to music. More specifically, it’s dedicated to music blogs, and more specifically than that, music blogs written by people right here in the HOME OF THE WORLD SERIES CHAMPION PHILADELPHIA PHUCKIN’ PHILLIES! One of the blogs we featured in the issue is called Bag of Songs, and it’s written by Tom Szwech. In our coverage you won’t find a picture of good ole Tom because, as he tells it in a post titled “How Not To Get Your Picture In The Paper” yesterday, “Take your first real vacation in about five years on the same week that Philadelphia Weekly decides they need to interview you for a special cover story on blogging for their annual music issue. And, during said vacation, end up being in the middle of the Nevada desert with no cell phone service when they try to call you for a real interview so you have to end up scrobbling together some too short answers to their questions in the middle of the night at an internet kiosk in a Las Vegas hotel lobby.”

Thems the breaks, I suppose. To make it up, I asked Tom to send in a big, gorgeous picture of his big, gorgeous self. That’s him above with his hefty music collection. Thanks, Tom.

XPN Announce “All Philly Music Day” In Honor Of Phillies World Series Victory

Tomorrow, in honor of the Phillies whipping major TB Ray ass, 88.5 WXPN are playing music written by Philadelphia bands exclusively—Dr. Dog, Hall and Oates, Amos Lee, the Hooters and more. In addition, they’ll be replaying a special edition of the Y-Rock on XPN Takeover with Shane Victorino, where the flyin’ Hawaiian will be laying down cuts of his favorite smooth and tasty jams. Why am I writing like it’s the ’50s? I don’t know!?!? I’m just stoked!

John Oates Performing “Star Spangled Banner”

What with all the bombast—the conspiracy theories, the moaning, general discontent—that followed game five, one thing has been chiefly overlooked. Namely, that John Oates did a solid for longtime songwriting partner Daryl Hall (the No. 1 selling duo of ALL TIME!), filling in for him to sing the national anthem when Hall came down with a spot of the flu. Awww.

No word yet as to who might sing the anthem before tonight’s shortened affair, but I’m guessing it won’t be the paralyzed-for-more-than-25-years Teddy Pendergrass, as a commenter on Idolator suggests.
