SXSW-ing With: Good Old War
This week, the annual South By Southwest (SXSW) music festival gets underway in Austin, TX, with more than a thousand bands — some well-established, some hoping for comebacks, most of them fledgling and/or unsigned — descending upon the town to impress music industry bigwigs (if such people exist anymore). Several Philly acts are making the trip down, including rootsy, folky indie-rock trio Good Old War. We caught up with singer-guitarist Dan Schwartz on the eve of the band’s trek south:
What are you most looking forward to about SXSW?
Free booze and babes, of course.
What do you hope to get out of playing at SXSW?
A savage tan.
How do you plan to rep Philly at SXSW?
Chanting “E-A-G-L-E-S!” at every possible moment.
Who are some of the other acts you’re hoping to catch at SXSW?
The Tallest Man on Earth, Devo, Andrew Lipke, Echo and the Bunnymen, and a few others we can’t remember.
What’s the best success story you’ve ever heard of that came out of SXSW?
Definitely Fleet Foxes. They’re totally deserving of anything that comes to them.
Schmoozing with music industry people: Love it or hate it?
Schmoozing rhymes with boozing. So yeah, we love it.
Ideally, what one celebrity or famous musician would you like to be in the crowd to witness your SXSW showcase?
If Paul Simon stood in the same place as me at some point in history, I’d be pretty juiced.
Lone Star or Shiner Bock?
Lone Star for sure.
