Antony To Release Beyonce Cover
If I had stayed for the entirety of Antony and the Johnsons‘ U.S. tour opener at the Keswick Theatre in February — instead of storming out in a huff after a few tunes because there was virtually no light with which to shoot photos for Spin during the first three songs (no flash allowed, y’know) — I would have heard Antony and company do their version of Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love,” which our own Brian McManus described thusly in his Spin magazine review:
“The band’s version of Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love” was a standout. The seven-piece group — outfitted in black suits, white button-ups, and skinny black ties, they looked more like Antony and the Reservoir Dogs — turned the dance floor-friendly Top 40 hit into a mournful ballad by placing somber guitar, staccato violin, and Hegarty’s shivering vocals where Beyoncé’s commanding sass once was.”
Fortunately, I can get my hands on an official copy of said cover — and so can you — on August 4th, when the group releases the “Aeon”/”Crazy in Love” double A-side single CD and 7” via Secretly Canadian Records.
We’ve heard whispers that Antony and the Johnsons might be making a return trip to Philadelphia in late summer or fall on another U.S. tour in support of their tremendous third album, The Crying Light. We’ll keep you posted…

One Response to “Antony To Release Beyonce Cover”

I was sitting next to Brian that night, and what I can say is this: Whereas Beyonce’s version emphasizes “In Love,” Antony’s version emphasized “Crazy.” To great effect. Remember when Alanis Morissette covered “My Humps”? Same kind of effect, without the irony.
