When we got to work this morning we were told something wild (wild!) was happening over at Google trends, where, in addition to the “Yeah, of course” current hot topics bubbling to the top of the search engine (”how did brittany murphy die?”, “avatar box office”, er, “tila tequila”) was this somewhat unexpected curio: “Asher Roth comes out.” We Googled it, and sure enough, it lead to hits galore claiming the unlikely rap star and Bucks County native was planning a sit down interview with the television network E! about his being gay.
Asher is the only hip hop star who has admitted that he is a gay. He is living a loving life in a “ gay section” of New York and is ready to tell the world that he is a gay.
That quote comes from something called Puggal, which is the first site that comes up in the search (linked above). But they’re certainlynot the only ones that picked up on the “news.” Having worked with Asher’s publicist for a PW cover, we emailed with the “What the what?” and got a quick “It’s only a rumor” from her Blackberry. Now said rumor has picked up so much traction Asher has issued his own press release denying it, complete with the requisite Seinfeldian Not that there’s anything wrong with that tone.
I hate to disappoint and take away the entertainment of it all but I am straight, not gay. It’s disheartening to know such “news” on someone’s personal life can be portrayed as fact with no viable source. This, to me, is an opportunity to expose our vulnerability to lies and manipulation through unprofessional and irresponsible news outlets, in which people consider TRUTH. Further, someone’s sexual orientation should NEVER be big news, as it delivers a troubling message to children that they can’t be themselves without fear of judgment. Race, creed, and sexual persuasion should not just be tolerated but understood and accepted. It’s extremely disappointing that this topic would be used with the intention of being hurtful. We are near 2010….2010!! Yet race, sex and religion still play a major role in a hate driven society. For the love of the future and humanity….let’s wake up.
Gayest. Denial. Ever.
Nah. But on the real: The cynic might believe this bit of news was started by the Asher camp itself so the masses don’t go into 2010 (…2010!) having forgotten completely about old Ash. But cynics are assholes. This is the Age of Obama, after all. Which, come to think of it, might be a huge reason Asher exists in the first place, if that makes any sense. Oh, it doesn’t? Well, fuck you. We basically just posted about it to run Asher’s prom picture again anyway.
