Tommy Up Takes ?uestlove Milkshake Off Menu At PYT, Says Questlove “Hasn’t Donated A Penny” To Sabina Rose O’Donnell Fund

tommyupLast week, like many media outlets in Philadelphia, we had something to say about ?uestlove’s lengthy screed about Donte Johnson, the man arrested for the rape and murder of Sabina Rose O’Donnell. We strongly disagreed with him. Tonight we noticed Tommy Up, owner of PYT and Sabina’s employer, left a comment on our post.

In true Up fashion, he doesn’t pull any punches. He alleges ?uest never raised or gave money to the Sabina Rose O’Donnell Fund, contrary to ?uest’s claims in both his original Twitlonger post about the matter and in a story published Monday by Newsweek. “Quest hasn’t donated a penny,” Up writes. Up also says he has taken PYT’s ?uestlove shake—a mixture of Frangelico Liquor, Bailey’s Irish Cream and vanilla ice cream—off the menu.

We have calls in to Up and ?uest to sort this all out. We’ll keep you posted on any new developments.

His complete comment after the jump.

Questo just got himself a story in Newsweek about his stance on Sabina’s killer. Sorry, a feature on his new album with his stance on Sabina’s killer as his platform.

Quest says, “I think that, more important than getting justice for our friend’s murder, we actually sort of need to investigate what would make someone 18 turn this nihilistic”.

Sorry, but what was most important was getting this sick person off the street before he did it to another girl. And he is off the street.

Quest’s “pass” for expressing his opinion about society being responsible for Donte’s actions is that he has been actively fundraising for her family. This is not true.

Money raised by people who care has gone to the Sabina Rose O’Donnell Fund, which is where the $25,000 reward came from that led to the tip that brought Donte in. It also benefited her family and has started the seed money for a permament memorial in her name. Quest hasn’t donated a penny. So I think his “pass” is retracted.

At Sabina’s workplace here at PYT we had a shake named after Quest because we, along with many in the city, looked up to him. It’s off the menu.

I realize I might have to wait years for my thought processes to sort themselves, to find a moment when opposing emotions don’t fight for primacy. Meanwhile, it seems to me that the first thing ?uestlove did wrong was to speak too soon, both for those of us who mourn and because his own thinking is revealed more than I imagine he intended. I can appreciate his private wish that it not be a black man, much less a boy, but to articulate this wish is not to empathize with Donte Johnson’s plight, much less the plight of Sabina and her family, so much as it is to identify with his deed. You say as much when you write, “that could have been me or any of us,” or that you internalized “Donte”.

Could it have been you, ?uestlove?

I’ve thought that one thing the world learned, or could have learned, from Ted Bundy, a privileged white man, is that the rape and murder of women have little to do with race or class: if what you’re saying is that Donte Johnson did what any poor black male might have done, then you might want to start untangling your own racial issues and leave the rest of us to mourn.

If I have a prayer it’s that I feel no less pain at the suffering of any being than what I’ve felt for my own children and grandchildren these past weeks, that I love all as my own, as my self, that I love well. But as I recognize in myself both love and the will to love, so too I know that there’s grace enough in life to forgive me, if I find no place in my heart for the one who killed Sabina.

If the thing prayed for shows where the heart lies, then yours, ?uestlove, cares for nothing so much as its own skin.

Tommy, thanks for this, and for reminding me that I had something to say.

Looking at my own words on the page, they seem like too much. What I want to get across, ?uestlove, is just this: it’d be best, for both us, I think, to either own our words or keep quiet.

To Stephanie, that was beautifully expressed and with a level of grace far exceeding expectations for someone in your shoes. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Tommy is an opportunist, he cares nothing for anything but his own ego, he would use anything to promote his own name and sell some more burgers.

    the truth.

Since this is the same Tommy who’s stood by our family since Sabina’s death, I can only guess that what you call the truth is, at least in part, exaggeration. Be careful how you use that word, unless you want it to lose all meaning.

I have been reading all these blog postings for a while and as a person who has lost my own Mother was most shocked to see Sabina’s family members on these posts actually arguing with people. Your family member passed away less than two months ago and you have the strength to be confrontational with these irrelevant people. Stop trying to honor her memory on the computer it comes across as you are just trying to be part of the media frenzy surrounding her death which look so insensitive. Let you family member have some peace, get off the internet talking about her it its the least that she deserves..

To what Sabina’s Grandma said. I could not have agreed more. Word for word. This is not a crime particular to one race or to one class, rich or poor. This is a crime by a sociopath. Sure what ?uest wrote sounds like the right approach to take. Its full of good intentions on how to rid our city of these pointless crimes. But its really nothing more than an insensitive, racist, and self-indulgent post.
