Gossip Roundup: Lollapalooza, Sigur Ros, “My Country,” Lil Wayne Love Songs, Kanye, And An Axl Rose Temper Tantrum
CONCERTS AND TOURS AND STUFF
>> Well, if you’re a baller and have a few hundred dollars to throw around on a getaway to Chicago full of musical adventure, you should probably start planning a Lollapalooza escapade. The lineup’s announced and, naturally, it’s pretty killer.
>> Holy crap! Whether or not you love Sigur Ros, this is kind of cool news. They announced some North American tour dates to support their upcoming new album, and they’ll start it all in Philly. In their tour they only have six American dates and they’ll kick it off at the Mann Center on July 30th.
>> Sure, they were just here. But they’re coming back. Real Estate’s expanded their summer tour to open for THE SHINS at the Tower on May 3rd. Funny how we care more about Real Estate than the Shins at this point, innit?
FRESH NEW VIDEOS
>> TUNEYARDS (I will not play that capitalization game) put out w h o k i l l about a year ago and, yes, we’re now getting a new video for “My Country.” And even if you’re like me, who can barely listen to that ish anymore, you’ll still have the cockles of your cranky heart warmed by this friggen’ adorable video featuring kids from the San Francisco Rock Project and a performance-positive group called Brightworks.
>> Watch a new !!! song called “Byron” as part of Pitchfork’s +1 series. Try your best to ignore their grandiose talking about making a new record, and that horrible lead singer’s ramblings about his performance style. They’re in town on Monday with Shabazz Palaces at The Blockley.
>> Just go ahead and watch the stunning new video for Nicki’s “Beez In The Trap.” Do it. Then, while you’re at it, check out the TWO new videos that Drake dropped for “Take Care” (with Rih Rih) and “HYFR” (with Lil Wayne).
>> Simian Mobile Disco’s got a new one for “Seraphim.”
NEW ALBUMS AND RECORDS AND SINGLES AND SUCH
>> OMG. Lil Wayne’s written a love songs record called Devol – that’s love spelled backwards and pronounced like “devil.” You can’t make this shit up.
>> That damn Scarlett Johansson. She got to work with Massive Attack’s 3D on a cover of “Summertime” for a dark and scary Days of Grace, a film directed by Everardo Valerio Gout. Thankfully, it’s not very good.
>> There’s a new Aesop Rock track for listening pleasure in anticipation of the Rhymesayers-backed release of Skelethon on July 10. The track’s called “Zero Dark Thirty” and it’s sick.
>> You know this: there’s a new Kanye track called “Mercy.”
>> Really lookin’ forward to the new El-P record out on May 22 (Fat Possum). Cancer for Cure now has a tracklist and album art for your consideration and it’ll have some pretty solid guests.
>> You can stream an album’s worth of Battles’ Gloss Drop remixes now. There’s a bunch of people doing good work on that friggen’ excellent album, including Shabazz Palaces and Gang Gang Dance.
RANDOM BITS ABOUT FILMS AND GOSSIP
>> They’re making a movie about N.W.A. called Straight Outta Compton. The Hollywood Reporter has news of a director to blame if it turns out terribly and it’s the guy who did Friday and The Negotiator, F. Gary Gray.
>> Does Kanye have to ruin everything? First he’s gonna keep up with one Kardashian on TV, and now he’s taken Q-Tip and signed him to G.O.O.D. music. He and Def Jam will issue Q-Tip’s new solo album, The Last Zulu, early next year.
>> Well, uh, Lil B gave a lecture at NYU the other day. And you can stream it, read it, or watch the entirety of his 90-minute ramblings in which his shirt was removed.
>> Oh snap. Axl’s stirring the pot again. He issued a ‘letter’ on Facebook in which he derides everything and refuses to accept both his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction and the prospect of Guns n’ Roses reuniting.
>> Elle Fanning’s in talks to be in a Belle and Sebastian film project, funded by Kickstarter, called God Bless The Girl. Oh, she is so precocious!
