Owe Taxes? Nutter’s Coming!

Don’t call it a movement. But if you owe back taxes, like Philly Car Share (hat tip: anonymous commenter), Mayor Michael Nutter nutter stickerwould like a word with you.

Actually, he’d like to hold a press conference outside your place of business, such as he did yesterday, outside a podiatrist’s office on Bustleton Avenue. He claimed the doctor owed $114,000 in outstanding back taxes, “ignored the city’s amnesty program and refused attempts to settle the debt.”

Tax amnesty is over, said M. Nutt, and now he’s sending Sheriff Green to ransack the place. The sheriff will “conduct a sale of the items from this business. Office furniture, televisions, everything we can auction we will,” M. Nutt told reporters. “We cannot afford to subsidize this business.”

According to WHYY, the podiatrist, when learning the mayor was coming to his front gate, shut down for the day claiming a “personal emergency.”

Don’t mess with M. Nutt, folks. Not now. Not after he’s got DROP and the Philadelphia Housing Authority’s shenanigans with which to deal. And his re-election campaign is less than a year away. He’s got to keep on movin’.

It is true that PhillyCarShare owes the State of Pennsylvania at least $352,516.75 in delinquent state sales taxes and probably twice that in the Vehicle Rental Taxes that have been illegally uncollected and unpaid, but what does that have to do with Philadelphia taxes and Mayor Nutter? Is there some evidence that PhillyCarShare owes taxes to the city or is the mention of this company in this article just a case of bringing in the name of a well known local company in an effort to try to make this a more exciting blog.

If the author of this article knows of any local taxes owed by PhillyCarShare and the city’s effort to collect it, that should be better investigated and proved before using them as a case study for local tax evasion.

If you want to make a case against PhillyCarShare, why don’t you do real investigating and find out directly from PhillyCarShare how they are attempting to pay off its Pennsylvania tax obligations.

    Great Job Mike!
Seriously it’s about time these fat cats paid there share instead of being allowed to continue riding our backs. With spurs, I might mention.
Bad enough they got away with it with US all these decades, but for crying out loud NOT THE KIDS TOO.
