DAILY GRINDER: Earth/Green Guilt Month
A huge sheriff sale takes place today after the three-month moratorium is lifted. Activist and Green Party sheriff candidate, Cheri Honkala, and other do-gooders from the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign slept overnight at 38th and Market Streets to be the first to bid on houses this morning. She says the “sleep out” is also to inform people that the Emergency Homeowners Loan Program funds have been released by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, who promises Pennsylvania its $105 million in “early April.” [This is happening]
Your protesting (sort of) worked! Maybe? Pennsylvania lawmakers say they might, on second thought, restore some education funding they so viciously decided to slash. They’re just taking it from the Department of Public Welfare. Divide and conquer, serfs! [Newsworks]
Former New Jersey Congressman John Adler died yesterday. He was 51. [Philly.com]
Pennsylvania House Bill 365 – the banning of bath salts and fake pot – passed the Pennsylvania House of Representatives unanimously yesterday. Get your hands on some before time runs out! [Times Leader]
Another PA Bill would seek to give the old ‘fuck you’ to the Westboro Baptist Church, making it illegal to demonstrate within 500 feet of a funeral. That bill’s being introduced by Rep. Marcy Toepel of Montgomery Country. Rep. Duane Milne of Chester thinks he can do one better and up the buffer to 1,000 feet. Do I see 1,500 feet? 1,500 feet going once… [ABC 27]
Fake presidential candidates “responded” to President Barack Obama’s re-election announcement yesterday. Rick Santorum: “We can’t take four more years of the ‘change’ the Obama Administration has forced upon America. The only thing that has changed is the amount of our debt, the size of our government, the loss of our freedom, the fewer jobs for those wanting work, the diminished stature of America, and an expensive military commitment without a clear national security purpose.” Oh. Snap. He sounds like a liberal circa 2003! [PoliticsPA]
Ugggghhh. Apparently, April is “Earth Month” in Philadelphia. Which means you’ve got to remember your tote bags at least once when you go food shopping in April. [Phila.gov]
PennDOT is looking to install more than 300 cameras on local highways, watching you and every-thing you do. They say they just want to alert authorities when they see something that might be illegal. The ACLU says this is a terrible thing. Someone’s gotta say it. [Fox]
