Independent Candidate for Sheriff, Activist Cheri Honkala, Files Nomination Paper
A few months after kick-starting her campaign, Cheri Honkala has filed nomination papers with the city, hoping to “keep families in their homes” if elected sheriff.
Honkala, the Green Party candidate for the position, says her team of volunteer supporters garnered 4,422 signatures endorsing her nomination, as of today. As an independent candidate, she was required to collect at least 1,845 signatures in order for her name to appear on the ballot.
“I’m absolutely blessed to have hundreds of supporters, who … are willing to go out there each and every day and be in 100-degree weather and collect signatures,” Honkala says. “I think it just shows people are really tired of what’s happening right now, in regards to the housing crisis.”
Honkala, a longtime champion for the homeless, says she plans to create community land trusts to put the control of land back into communities’ hands. By doing this, Honkala adds, communities could protect land from becoming the site of a profit-making business and help neighbors who may be facing economic hardships.
The housing crisis is affecting everyone and is only going to get worse, Honkala says, making note of end of the Homeowner’s Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program and of the federal Emergency Homeowners’ Loan Program.
HEMAP, which offered emergency help to homeowners struggling financially, ended July 1, Honkala says. The deadline to apply for Pennsylvania’s EHLP, a program providing loans to homeowners facing foreclosure due to unemployment or other involuntary reasons, is September 30.
“We have 40,000 vacant parcels of land and property,” Honkala says. “We’re really going to see that number balloon. I definitely think is not just an issue of homeless people.”
Along the lines of her mission to keep families in their homes, Honkala says, she won’t cooperate with Information and Customs Enforcement when it comes to the deportation of undocumented citizens.
“I’m not interested in tearing families apart and deporting immigrants, because I think this is a city and land of immigrants—and separating families is not the way to deal with the immigration issue in this country.”
Honkala will be facing off against Democratic Candidate Jewell Williams and Republican Candidate Joshua West.
To keep her campaign afloat, though, Honkala says that she’ll need more support. “There’s no way I can take on my opponent unless we can raise big money,” Honkala says. “People who are sitting out there thinking that their $10 doesn’t count, it really does.”
