BREAKING: Eric Cantor Cancels Wharton Speech; Occupy to Blame?

After more than a week of organizing and promoting an “Occupy Eric Cantor” rally during his scheduled speech at UPenn today, House GOP Majority Leader Eric Cantor has cancelled his Wharton speech. There’s no reason for the cancellation, just this:

I am very sorry but we just learned from US House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s office that he has canceled today’s Leadership Lecture. Apologies for any inconvenience. Thank you.

“Occupy Eric Cantor” was set to begin at Dilworth Plaza at 2:30pm today, followed by a long march all the way to UPenn’s campus. It was set to last until 6pm, according to Occupy Philly’s schedule email that was sent out this morning.

Eric Cantor has smeared the Occupy Wall Street Movement as a “mob.”

UPDATE: From Think Progress:

While the university gave no reason for the cancellation, CNN is reporting that Cantor canceled after the university decided to make the speech open to the public. Cantor had signed up for a “selected audience.” The speech was seen as a response to the 99 Percent movement, and Occupy Philadelphia had organized a march from City Hall to the school.

The march will go on as planned.

UPDATE 2: From Occupy Philly:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 21, 2011

REP. CANTOR CANCELS, OCCUPY PHILLY MARCHES FOR INTEGRITY

Day 16 – Rep. Eric Cantor cancelled a speech at the Wharton School today after hearing news of a big turnout bringing awareness to the lack of jobs and a fair economy. The planned march with Occupy Philly is now a “March for Integrity” and will depart at 2:30PM to meet a swell of protestors at 37th and Locust.

is occupy to blame? No. Eric Cantor’s cowardice when it comes to confronting peopel with a different opinion is to blame.

that’s how it is with today’s republicans: they simply cannot brook disagreement or dissent with their opinions. That’s why people like Pat Toomey hold these closed-door, pay-to-enter “public” events, where anyone who disagrees with his line is ushered out the door by the cops.

these guys are SO tough when their hurling rhetorical jabs at the poor, the unemployed, and the uninsured. they wave their “don’t tread on me” flags like they’re gonna kick your ass, but the minute someone stands up to them, they run away. Calling someone like Eric Cantor a pussy is an insult to vaginas.
