DAILY GRINDER: Philly Rep. Josephs to be Censured by GOP Radical?
The Harrisburg fighting between Rep. Daryl Metcalfe and Rep. Babette Josephs of Pennsylvania’s 182nd District (parts of South Philly, Center City, Fairmount) has reached its boiling point. Metcalfe, in the long, hard road to push through as many pieces of wingnut legislation as he can (Berfer bills, Voter ID, anti-immigration, etc.) has just had it up to here with Josephs. After all, she speaks out of turn…Out of turn! And for this, Metcalfe says he’s going to ask House Speaker Sam Smith if she can be censured, because no fair. (Note: Censuring literally means she will have to stand there and take strong disapproval or criticism from her House colleagues. We assume she will enjoy this.)
Uh oh. Occupy Philly is in its 21st day and it’s now cost the city $430,000.
Someone spray painted Freedom > Government on Governor Corbett’s brick wall. It was done by a rebellious anti-corporate group calling themselves Wolf Pac, which, sure. But vandalism sucks, children. Where are your parents?
A senate committee has OK’d Governor Tom Corbett’s school initiatives: school vouchers, charter school expansion and increased funding of tax credits to pay for private school tuition. Which, if passed in the full legislature and signed by the governor, will mean bad news for teacher’s unions and public education in general, which we guess is the point. Sen. Daylin Leach of MontCo says of the proposals, “To help a small percentage of kids, we’re going to be hurting badly the overwhelming majority of kids,” by using state education dollars to pay for vouchers.
Pennsylvania has the worst bridges in the country. They’re ready to fall apart. But that’s not sexy news, like sending kids to religious schools on the public dime, so let’s do nothing about them, despite what the auditor general says.
Council at-Large candidate Joe McColgan is jumping on the ‘No Council cars’ talking point, and said so in a press email yesterday. He’s also willing to go without a pension. You might remember McColgan from the time he threatened to beat that guy up and that time you thought he wanted to beat you up. Which is every time he looks at you. He’s got that look.
Do red light cameras work? Probably not. According to police data, many Philly intersections that’ve added red light cameras over the past six years in the name of public safety have seen an increase in car accidents. This may be directly due to the cameras. Police say drivers may be stopping abruptly to avoid running red lights and are then slammed from behind.
Rick Santorum is now yelling about anti-sodomy laws to some guy named Bradlee Dean, a preacher and founder of a “Christian punk rock church” called You Can Run But You Cannot Hide International, based in Minnesota. Rick Santorum wants to be sedated.
