Occupy Philly, Jobs for Justice Call for General Strike Today at Noon

In a press conference at City Hall yesterday afternoon, Occupy Philly called for a general strike of workers and students at noon today, in solidarity with Occupy Oakland, where an Iraq war veteran suffered a skull fracture during a police confrontation last week. Occupy Oakland’s general assembly of 1600, initially passed the resolution with a 96.9 percent majority.

Occupy Philly’s call for walk-outs echoes Oakland’s, whose proposal reads, “We propose a city-wide general strike and we propose we invite all students to walk out of school. Instead of workers going to work and students going to school, the people will converge on downtown Oakland to shut down the city.”

And given, “All banks and corporations should close down for the day or we will march on them,” it might be an interesting day in the Bay Area. Occupy Philly is asking students and workers to walk out for 99 minutes at 12 o’clock. The strike will start with an open mic at Dilworth Plaza and be followed by a march led by veterans and service men and women.
