DAILY GRINDER: Joe Paterno and Graham Spanier OUT at Penn State

Both Penn State coach Joe Paterno and school president Graham Spanier have been told to board the next bus to “Anywhere but here.” That was announced, in so many words, last night, after the school initially said Paterno would leave at the end of the season. Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley was been named interim coach and Penn State provost Rodney Erickson is the interim president.

And U.S. Education Secretary—out of a job in a Rick Perry presidency (?)—says an investigation will be pursued in light of the Sandusky child sex/rape/torture cover-up case. It’s been requested by U.S. Rep Patrick Meehan.

ESPN College Football reporter Tweeted the following last night: “Paterno is said to have been told of fondling, touching or horseplay but not sodomy or rape.”

The family of boxing legend Joe Frazier has announced plans for his funeral and other services. His remains will be on public view at the Wells Fargo Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, then 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Could former Governor Ed Rendell become Temple University president? Probably not. At least not until he’s done “commenting” on MSNBC during the 2012 elections.

Pennsylvania: Third on the nation’s mercury production list.

There’s a warming tent at Occupy Philly. And inside, a cot, chairs and Ron Paul posters. Occupy is getting ready to deal with what they’re calling “a bitter-cold Pennsylvania winter.”

Of course Marcellus Shale drilling companies are getting ready to use counter-intelligence “military tactics to counter drilling opponents.” Ex-military personnel have been hired to “develop local ordinances,” drink your milkshake.

Actually Joe tried to pre-empt his firing by saying he would leave at the end of the season – apparently it did not work.

IF these two reported the offense to their superiors, then, there wasn’t a lot more that they could do without jeopardizing their jobs. As a teacher for 33 yrs., when we suspect or know about child abuse, we are told to report it to the principal, nurse, directors, guidance, etc. and then we are told that it is no longer our business. They tell us that they report it to DYFS and then we are told to keep out of it. We are no longer allowed to know what happens after that due to confidentiality. So, if that is what they did, they may not have had any other recourse after. They may have been told that it was dealt with, etc. It’s a fine line.. If this wasn’t such a huge school and media frenzy, only the superior officials of the school would have been responsible and reprimanded. Had Joe P. and Graham gone to the police they probably would have lost their jobs.
