Highlights from Newsweek Article About Karen Santorum’s Former Relationship

Oh, gossip! Now that Rick Santorum’s one of five Republicans still in the race for president, people are writing about him. This week, Newsweek has a story about his wife, Karen, and the life she lived before she found Santorum and, by extension, his version of the Lord.

Karen Santorum—then Karen Garver—was delivered by Dr. Tom Allen, a Pittsburgh obstetrician, in 1960. In 1982, when she was 22 and Allen was 63, she moved into his basement apartment.

[B]ut she wasn’t there long, says Allen. “That first night, as soon as it got dark, she called to say she was scared and asked if she could come up. I figured it was a come-on, but that was OK.” Karen, he says, came upstairs, permanently.

They dated for nearly six years.

Allen, now 92, is noted to have dated tons of younger women during his day. Curt Katz, who owned the local Mercedes dealership in the area, notes that the two were “quite the couple.”

They broke up in 1988 because “Karen wanted to have children, and that was something I had already done,” Allen told Newsweek. She soon met Rick Santorum when she was recruited to intern at his lawfirm and they were married in 1990.

Now the question on everyone’s mind: Is this story fair game? Normally, the newsmedia stays away from spouses, other than to mock Michelle Obama’s eating habits (though conservative outlets and radio claim that’s out of ‘hypocrisy’), and, by extension, pretend to believe she’s not attractive. The fact remains that Rick Santorum is a person people know about because of his dealings on abortion and birth control—most notably, his desire to drop an atomic bomb of human shit on both, legislatively speaking. This story relates to that. It makes sense to have been published.

Update/Whoops: City Paper broke this story some years ago. But it’s Santorum, and what’s old is new!
