DAILY GRINDER: Rick Santorum on a Roll; May be Scaring Obama?

The Obama Campaign is ready to take on Rick Santorum, should the Republican party establishment not be able to stop him from becoming the nominee. Yesterday, the Pennsylvania branch of the president’s campaign team sent an email (in part), asking you, the reader, to personally bash the former Pennsylvania Senator: “Folks across the country are just starting to learn about Rick Santorum as he enjoys his newfound wave of popularity. But people here have known him for some time — long before he was out on the national stage like he is now. And it’s on us to make sure the rest of the country sees Rick Santorum’s true colors. We all have a role to play in helping introduce the real Rick Santorum to voters in the 49 other states. Your story will help hold him responsible for his actions — and could inspire other Pennsylvanians to get involved and raise their voices, too.”

Rick Santorum finally released four years worth of taxes yesterday. And the 2000s were good to the Santorums. He went from a measly $659,000 in 2007 to $923,000 in 2010. And in North Dakota last night, Santorum told a crowd, “I don’t have wealth. I don’t have investments. I don’t have capital gains.”

According to a new Rasmussen poll, which, as I’ve mentioned before, are weird, Santorum leads Romney nationally by 12 points. That’s huge.

And Santorum released this awesome ad, too:

A bill moving through the state General Assembly will impose a penalty on local ordinances which seek to pass their own gun laws, such as Philadelphia, who’ve enacted local laws to curb illegal gun sales. And the NRA is just so happy about that. Because as you and I both know: WHEN GUNS ARE OUTLAWED ONLY OUTLAWS HAVE GUNS! And: WHEN ILLEGAL GUN SALES ARE KEPT IN CHECK BY REPORTING OF LOST/STOLEN GUNS, THE AMERICAN FLAG LITERALLY DIES.

The Philadelphia Media Network is looking to get rid of 37 positions, according to an internal memo. The layoffs/buyouts may end up being reporters, news artists, photographers, copy editors, assistants, etc. That sucks.

Philadelphia City Council may introduce legislation that would “update” the way you pay tickets, and when all is said and done, you may not need to go to traffic court to fight one of the PPA’s onerous fines they leave on your car. Instead, you’d be able to send in your testimony. Councilmen Bill Green and Bobby Henon are championing this issue/noted that for many Philadelphians, it’s easier to pay the fine than to wait in that horrible room. Assuming this gets done, they will be the most popular people in Philadelphia.

Kind of a brilliant strategy from the Obama campaign. I’ve been thinking maybe they should start treating Santorum like the Republican frontrunner, and maybe cut an ad against him early, just to fuck with the Republican primary. Santorum would use it as evidence Obama doesn’t want to run against a *real* conservative, which happens to be a thing Republican primary voters already want to believe.
