Occupy Philadelphia decided to camp out and occupy Independence Mall this weekend. Things went pretty well at first. But on Saturday they were asked by park rangers to get a permit. They responded, on Facebook, saying the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was their permit. Legally speaking, that didn’t seem to be the case, because on Sunday night, around 6 p.m., rangers gave them one hour to move their tents. Negotiations went on between members of the gathering and the rangers, but did not pan out. They were evicted, and left. Then they headed to the Wells Fargo on Market Street soon after and camped out there. [Note: They headed back to Independence Mall this morning.]

Also, over the weekend, members of Occupy Philly endorsed the July 4 National Gathering at Independence Mall.

Rep. James Roebuck of Philadelphia’s 188th House District is being attacked in mailers for education problems in the city—and likely because of his opposition to school vouchers. He blames Sen. Anthony Hardy Williams for the attacks. Williams denies this. He is a strong pro-voucher advocate. As is Roebuck’s opponent, Fatimah Muhammad.

Presidential candidate Rick Santorum says he’ll be staying with his daughter, Bella, until Tuesday. Bella, 3, suffers from Trisomy 18 and is currently in the hospital. He still plans to attend the National Rifle Association’s national convention in St. Louis on Friday.

Meanwhile, Romney is looking to deliver the knockout punch to the Santorum campaign at the Pennsylvania primary on April 24. Romney plans to spend $2.9 million on television campaign ads between now and the primary.

The Pennsylvania Department of General Services recent started a new public online auction, which sells items deemed dangerous confiscated from airplane passengers. Pennsylvania thinks they can get more funds into the state by selling the items—things like knives, tools, other things you could potentially use to take over a plane—than they were getting before, when the items were going to warehouses. Sixty-one percent of Pennsylvania businesses, answering a survey conducted by PNC Bank Economic Outlook, are “moderately optimistic” about their local economy. In addition, 55 percent expect sales to increase over the next six months, while 8 percent believe their sales will decrease.
