SEPTA’s not the only transit authority in the country—or the northeast—that’s seeing a rise in attacks on operators in recent years. According to CBS New York, New York City subway workers were physically attacked 94 times last year, and harassed 1,092 times; numbers not much different from Philly. But unlike in Philly, lawmakers are suggesting what some might call extreme measures to equip transit workers with the means to stop an attack—such as, say, a fucking taser.

State Sen. Eric Adams pushed for a law allowing commuter train and Amtrak crews to carry tasers in that state last year, but the bill died. Now Adams, a retired police captain, is renewing the push for tasers in the hands of transit workers and operators.

“I believe that if you’re allowing a train operator to control tons of equipment then truly we can allow them to control a small device, such as a Taser,” he said.

That’s a pretty big step, considering the best Pennsylvania looked to do legislatively—and so far failed at—is putting transit workers on Senate Bill 236, which would make attacks on operators a first degree felony.
