DAILY GRINDER: Will You Protest With Occupy or Strippers?
At 3 p.m. today, a group of strippers (more than 80 planning to attend at this point) will protest in front of the Daily News over a recent cover story regarding prostitution arrests at the Gold Club in Center City. Mostly, they’re pissed the Daily News went out of its way to quote Dr. Mary Ann Layden, who, according to the blog Sex With Timaree, “implies all women in exotic dance are fueled by drug addiction and unable to make their own choices, she vilifies and pathologizes men who use porn or visit strip clubs and she makes illogical associations between sexual content and violence”—a fair point. A woman calling herself Melissa Bang Bang Forgione, who set up the event, will read and present her letter to the editor on Broad Street denouncing the article and paper. Here is a Daily News blog mocking the protest.
And then there’s Occupy. AND THEN THERE’S OCCUPY! They’re back, bitches, maybe! According to the group’s public schedule, things have already begun! Free coffee began at 8 a.m. Then it’s a “sit-in sing along” at 3801 Market St. at 9 a.m. Noon: “Occupy Philly will strike every bank in the city. Meet at 1700 Market St in front of Wells Fargo for a festive march and roving picket which will shut down several bank branches throughout the day.” Also at noon, a march through West Philadelphia begins at 52nd and Market and plans to protest that section of the city “being turned into a center of repression,” as we wrote here. From 3 p.m.-7p.m., protesters will celebrate in Elmwood Park “and the Philadelphia Childcare Collective will be providing games and face-painting for kids.” Then, at 7 p.m., it’s a General Assembly.
The Drudge Report is already warning Americans the country over of the mischief Occupy is set to unveil for May Day. There are reports of white powder being sent to banks and whatever goes on in Philly today, it’s not expected to be as crazy as it might be in New York City or Oakland. May Day, or International Workers Day, is often a celebration of left wing and labor movements and and today there will likely be differing celebrations all over the world. Many a conservative are trying to invoke the fear that this is really about a communist takeover the Occupy Movement and Obama Administration are concocting together (imagine Occupy were that powerful!) and are using Obama’s latest ad, which reads “Forward” as evidence of that.
What’s so sinister about the word “Forward,” you ask? Well, according to the Washington Times, who cite Wikipedia (which may have been edited by a pizza guy), “The name Forward carries a special meaning in socialist political terminology. It has been frequently used as a name for socialist, communist and other left-wing newspapers and publications.” Sure! Good enough for me!
A local tax break for the poor which was put into place by the late Councilman David Cohen in 2004 is set to go into effect in 2016, but maybe not. A group called The Fair Share Coalition protested City Council yesterday over plans to eliminate what’s now called the “Cohen Ordinance.”
More government officials are warning of what state cuts could do to the city’s mental health system.
Mitt Romney is in Bryn Mawr today, at a fundraiser hosted by some la-dee-da real estate moguls, who previously hosted funraisers for Rick Santorum and John McCain. According to this blog, they live in a gigantic house, too. Plenty of room for Romney’s hair helmet!
And the Obama Campaign is unleashing Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro. He will hold a duel media event, talking about how Obama is awesome and Mitt Romney sucks at middle class issues and whatnot. He won’t, however (or is at least not scheduled to), talk about last year’s raid on Osama bin Laden because HOW DARE YOU MR. PRESIDENT!
Another day, another priest involved in the Philadelphia abuse case admits he watched porn with a 14-year-old and shared his bed—but swears nothing else happened! You gotta believe him, it was a totally innocent case of priest lays in bed and watches porn with child.
