DAILY GRINDER: Romney, Santorum To Meet in Pittsburgh, Not Philadelphia

santorumWe thought Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney were supposed to meet in Philadelphia to discuss their future! That’s what was said, anyway. Remember: “Coincidentally,” explained Santorum’s chief strategist John Brabender on MSNBC, “that meeting [between Romney and Santorum] might take place here in Philadelphia. What a great place to start a winning campaign for the fall, would be right here, where basically America got started.” Yeah. Would have been great is more like it. The two are crossing paths in Pittsburgh, instead. Tomorrow. Brabender says the former candidate will not bring a list of 20 demands and will not discuss his convention speaking spot. It’s just, you know, a get-to-know-you sort of thing.

Meet Viviette Applewhite, the 93 year-old Germantown woman who’s a plaintiff in the state Voter ID lawsuit. She voted for the first time in 1960, doesn’t drive, can’t get her birth certificate from the state, and, therefore, can’t vote in 2012. See, Republicans, this is exactly what they were talking about when you were arguing about using ID to get into your swim and tennis clubs. The suit, filed by the ACLU of Pennsylvania and others, seeks to overturn the Pennsylvania Voter ID law, passed by the Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Tom Corbett in March.

Here’s a weird editorial in the Washington Examiner based around the questions surrounding the future of Philadelphia’s oil refineries. It’s said the Philly refineries were good for Middle Eastern/African oil, while North Dakota and Canadian oil is where it’s at—and ethanol is just horrible. Oddly, the writer blames Bush-signed ethanol policy for the losses, but a) Does not mention Bush by name once and B) Does mention and bash Obama throughout.

District Attorney Seth Williams has gone out and told City Council what I have been telling everyone I know for years now: Watch Law and Order. “as I try to tell high school students and anybody else when I go out into the community and meetings …If you watch this TV show, Law and Order, the first half is about what the police do. The police officers in uniform show up. The detectives show up they solve the crime. That’s the first half hour… “The police are just the first half hour of the show. That’s just half, part of the show. If you hire nothing but cops, right, on Law and Order when they do their job then nothing happens after they get arrested. But you have to have the assistant district attorneys trying the cases.”

Pennsylvania had the most Republican-to-Democrat House Congressional seat shifts in 2006. Now, those “moderate Democrats”—who never should have represented many of the districts they did in the first place—are almost all gone. Which isn’t that big a loss. Most of them were the Blue Dog Democrats who, in a sense, were worse than Republicans, in terms of actual progress. All their votes were based upon not looking like Democrats, or being perceived as liberal at all–I’m a (pro-life, pro-gun, pro-war) Democrat! I’m a (anti-science, anti-health care reform, big business) Democrat! These guys’ jobs relied on not being who they are, or working with their team. That became a little tougher when Obama was given his hand to fix shit in 2009.

Interesting point about Philly’s refineries and the Bakken in North Dakota. How’s the infrastructure for getting the oil there from ND? That would have to be rail based, I would think.
