DAILY GRINDER: Free Booze For Smashed Bottles
CBS 3 decided to make some news of their own: They bought wine, poured it out, smashed the bottle, brought the glass back into the state store, and got a new bottle of wine – “no questions asked.” It sounds stupid, sure, but apparently stores are losing tons of money on the policy and taxpayers are footing the bill. Last year alone, the PLCB “lost $2.5 million worth of wine and liquor: bottles broke, stolen or just plain missing.” Problem is, now that this has made the news and lawmakers are looking into it, you can’t do it! (Probably.)
And speaking of which, the Pennsylvania House is staring at two bills that’d allow out-of-state wineries to ship directly into Pennsylvania.
Christ-like? “A Roman Catholic cardinal and his top aides lied to their lawyer about shredding a key piece of evidence in the Philadelphia clergy-abuse scandal, the lawyer testified Monday.”
A 55-year-old man was killed by an Amtrak train in Juniata yesterday at 3 p.m.
Republican City Councilman David Oh called a hearing to look into local tax credits for companies that hire local military veterans. The idea is similar to and would work with a federal program, which went into place in the fall. “David Oh: Not trying to make up for exaggerating his military service since 2012.”
Philadelphia-area state representatives want to swing gaming money to Philadelphia to help the school district. Mayor Michael Nutter wants to re-assess property tax rates to do it. And some are saying the mayor isn’t handing over enough information to make a decision on either.
Finally, Republican Senate candidate Tom Smith has slammed Senator Bob Casey for being a Democrat, and therefore a member of the party who has not passed a budget in over three years. He released a petition saying “no budget, no pay,” but of course doesn’t have his own plan.
The only thing worse than a weak newspaper that buckles under the pressure of a powerful union boss trying (pathetically) and failing, to ruin a good man’s reputation by synthesizing a smear campaign against him … is a weaker one that doesn’t even perceive the reality, and perpetuates the diabolical nonsense like a blind sheep being led to the slaughter. Meanwhile, Candidate David Oh set the record straight and has become Councilman Oh … and is on to unprecedented activity bringing Philadelphia international visitors and attention such as the Mayor of Incheon (I will let the illustrious news organization research the significance of this) tomorrow. Or perhaps, you can keep up the mindless, negative, deconstructive dribble that keeps Philadelphians first misled, and secondly jaded into a needless inferiority complex and unnecessary distrust in their leadership while significant new ground is broken despite the corrupt old guard’s effort … man, maybe I should start my own paper, cause this is way more investigative, informative and quite frankly helpful, than your regurgitations.
As a wine supplier to the PLCB, we actually get billed back on those “free” bottles. So, the citizens aren’t paying for that, the suppliers pay for it whether they like it or not. We have no say in the matter.
