Pennsylvania Rep. Introduces Bill to Defund Planned Parenthood

Earlier today, State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) introduced what he’s calling the Whole Woman’s Health Funding Priorities Act. The bill would essentially defund Planned Parenthood in Pennsylvania.

Even though tax money that goes to Planned Parenthood goes toward cancer screenings and other services, not abortion, Metcalfe insists this not true. He notes state law “indirectly funds” abortions in Pennsylvania by giving any money at all to organizations that provide abortions. The bill, according to PoliticsPA, does not get rid of all female health funding, though. Rather, it, “prioritizes funding first to public entities such as health departments; second to non-public hospitals and Federally Qualified Health Centers; third to rural health clinics; and fourth to non-public health providers that can provide primary “Whole Woman” care.”

As noted by Keystone Politics, “The trouble with cretins like Daryl Metcalfe is that they totally get their rocks off on outrage from liberals. That’s really what this nonsense about defunding Planned Parenthood is all about. It’s just dumb grievance politics.”

Which is possible. Metcalfe is responsible for a number of other right wing bills which could be argued as meaningless. They include anti-immigration legislation, English-only government documents, a bill banning gay marriage, a bill honoring Ronald Reagan, a “Birther” bill challenging President Obama’s spot on the Pennsylvania ballot and legislation that would encourage the U.S. Senate to deny a United Nations bill that would tell you how to raise your kids.

Either way, it’s unlikely the legislation will move at any point this year, even if Corbett might support it. The governor has often vocalized his pro-life stances.

The Pennsylvania state budget currently includes an increase in Planned Parenthood funding. Metcalfe has said taxpayers funding Planned Parenthood means the people of Pennsylvania are being “forced to subsidize the loss of innocent lives,” adding, “In reality, women in Pennsylvania will be healthier and the children safer when we permanently defund Planned Parenthood and its anti-family agenda.”
