Local T-Shirt Company Releases LGBT-Friendly Line For a Cause
Local T-shirt company, Socially Conscious Shirts, announced this month they’re partnering with Equality PA and will help support the LGBT group’s education fund through the selling of a new T-shirt design.
The shirt, which reads “Love is Love” alongside pictures of same-sex relationships, is being sold on Social Conscious Shirts’ website for $15 — $5 of which goes directly to Equality PA, “to help them continue to fight for equality for LGBT Pennsylvanians,” according to Socially Conscious Shirts’ website.
Socially Conscious Shirts was co-founded by Joel Bridger, 23, who runs the business off Spring Garden Street in Northern Liberties. He began in October 2011, when he started creating T-shirts for Occupy Philadelphia, and ended up raising $1,000 for the group through shirt sales. After that, he tells us over the phone, “I thought I need to run with this idea because I want to continue a month-to-month campaign for different socially responsible organizations through t-shirt sales,” and build a business that way. This is his first “full-scale” fundraiser.
According to an Equality PA press release, the shirts send “the message that LGBT families and relationships deserve nothing less than full equality.” They’ll begin being sold this month in the Gayborhood and will continue through all pride festivals in Pennsylvania.
Bridger says the first spot he’s been OK’d to sell the T-shirts is outside Doggie Style at 13th and Sansom, where he’ll be on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. throughout the summer.
An alumni of Temple’s education program and City Year, he says his next project will likely be a campaign for Philadelphia education.
