DAILY GRINDER: Nutter Calls Shooter ‘Asshole’—Again
Mayor Nutter is again calling a shooter—specifically, the 16-year-old kid who opened fire during the July 4th festivities in Center City—an “asshole” and is once again correct. As it was put by the mayor: “I’m not going to let a 16-year old asshole who’s got a beef with somebody from a month ago in Germantown, to negatively impact the image of the city.”
Another gunman was shot this morning during a standoff with police. He was allegedly walking down Broad Street in Center City…firing a gun at windows. He turned his gun on police as a SWAT team showed up, was himself shot and is now in critical condition. No word if bath salts were involved.
There was a recent article in the Guardian describing the “lackluster” Occupy National Gathering that recently left Philly, in which the author notes: “the hundreds of thousands who participated in Occupy protests last fall did not trek to Philadelphia. There is no one reason why it has submerged back into the middle-class discontent from which it sprang, but this Philadelphia scene does reveal why the movement has faded.” And later summed up nicely here: “Occupy’s child-like view of politics – how consensus and participatory democracy will free the angels within every one of us – was a big reason for its success because it offered a palpable alternative to our cynical, acquisitive society. Yet it apparently hasn’t dawned on the hive mind that it is impossible to satisfy all rights, every time, everywhere.” Read the whole thing.
A pitbull puppy was found in West Oak Lane, burned and suffering from possible smoke inhalation. Burning dogs, fucked up as it is, is now being called a “trend” in Philadelphia by the Pennsylvania SPCA. A trend.
Some Philadelphia Latino residents are alleging the district lines from the 2000 census (which are in use right now because Republicans put forth an unconstitutionally-redistricted map months ago) is a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment—specifically the One Person, One Vote doctrine. Those lines, the three plaintiffs in a recently-filed case argue, don’t reflect the large Latino population increases in places like Philadelphia and Berks counties. They’re suing with the help of the Latino Justice Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund.
Muhammad Ali will receive the real Liberty Award in Philly this year.
Seems like it’s possible the Penn Treaty Special Services District won’t give that $74,000 grant to Mike Driscoll, the Democratic committeeman who runs Finnegan’s Wake. He’s putting up a new home for the Democratic City Committee in Northern Liberties next to the Bro Bar and wanted to own and fix up Bodine Street — which sits directly between the two buildings — with the cash.
