DAILY GRINDER: Mitt Romney Goes Out With His Middle-Finger Raised

Is this the last time we pull out the Romney puppet? We'll see.

Is this the last time we pull out the Romney puppet?

Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney kept his psychopathic streak alive yesterday when he told campaign donors who gave millions of dollars to his campaign for naught, that Obama won the election because he gave minorities, women and children “gifts.” Take it, Mitt (because you do it so well): “The President’s campaign,” he said, “focused on giving targeted groups a big gift—so he made a big effort on small things. Those small things, by the way, add up to trillions of dollars…our strategy worked well with many people, but for those who were given a specific gift, if you will, our strategy did not work terribly well.”

The episode was similar to the time Romney got caught on candid camera during the campaign, telling big money donors that 47 percent of the country are lazy and on welfare. He later walked back the statement on the Sean Hannity show on Fox News—after the network, itself, couldn’t figure out whether to call the statement a gaffe, a misstatement or a fact.

We’ll give Mitt Romney this: He’s is “owning it.” Though “it,” sadly, is not responsibility.

The dude’s running mate Paul Ryan told a local Wisconsin news station that it was the “urban vote” that really did in the Romney-Ryan ticket. “I don’t think we lost it on those budget issues, especially on Medicare, we clearly didn’t lose it on those issues,” Ryan told local station WISC-TV. “I think the surprise was some of the turnout, some of the turnout especially in urban areas, which gave President Obama the big margin to win this race.”

To round things out this week, The Nation exclusively released audio of a recording of Lee Atwater explaining the GOP’s “Southern Strategy”—a campaign tactic in which the right uses racist rhetoric to stir up Southerners using codewords instead of blunt racist terms—which had been quoted before but never heard. And it goes a little something (exactly) like this: “You start out in 1954 by saying, “Nigger, nigger, nigger.” By 1968 you can’t say “nigger”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “Nigger, nigger.””

So that’s it. I’m just saying that’s what was at play here, what happened this week — I’m just saying! And, perhaps, connecting the dots. And more nakedly, calling Mitt Romney a sore-losing sociopath, who, quite obviously, despises—and likely always will despise—a huge portion of the country he spent the last six years campaigning to lead.

PhillyNow disclaimer: this is the last blog of the week. I am headed south to the Association of Alternative Newsmedia’s Workshop for Writers, in D.C., through Saturday.

Don’t forget to check out this week’s PW cover story—The Survivors’ Project—and buy our new eBook on Amazon.com. It’s less than the price of a latte (I know, I know, what isn’t these days? But seriously, it’s $3.99). Editors Nina and Joel Hoffmann will be reading from the book on Monday at the Free Library.

  1. After the election, Romney should know better than anyone that money just can’t buy everything. Despite all odds, our President prevailed. He still has an uphill battle fighting a Red House which has blocked his every move in an attempt to squash his goals of bringing the Middle Class equal pay, women’s rights, gay rights and affordable healthcare. The Bush Administration drove our economy into a swift nose dive and Obama is still the patsy.
