Noted Local Survivalist Arrested in New Jersey on Weapons Charges
Noted local survivalist, gun enthusiast and subject of a 2009 PW cover story by Steven Wells, 39-year-old Fernando Antonio Salguero was arrested in Somerdale, N.J., yesterday on charges of possession of destructive devices, possession of “certain weapons” and transportation of weapons, according to the Somerdale police department.
From PW’s profile of Salguero:
“Salguero isn’t convinced that civilization in its current form is going to continue for much longer. He believes that a cataclysm will occur and that with the exception of himself, his loved ones and those he teaches, his species is horribly unprepared. When megamillion death comes a-courting it could be in one of any of a thousand guises, and Salguero is familiar with all the major suspects.”
According to the Somerdale police department, “while investigating a suspicious white 2005 Ford Crown Victoria bearing (PA) license plates illegally parked on Cedar Avenue in Somerdale, the Department requested the assistance of the Camden County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad.
“During the investigation, the K-9 indicated the presence or previous presence of explosive materials in the vehicle, which developed probably cause to seek a search warrant for the vehicle.”
No explosives were found; just the weapons. According to a Philly.com report, police discovered “rocket-propelled flares, an extendable baton, and tear gas inside Salguero’s car.”
I met Salguero while reporting on the ideological pretzel that was known as “the Ron Paul tent” at Occupy Philly. The situation was tense: Some Occupiers were freaked out by Salguero because he routinely open-carried a Colt .45 on his hip while on Dilworth Plaza. Someone let their feelings be known the old-fashioned way: One morning, Salguero found his pamphlets swiped and a pile of shit on the floor of his tent. (Some hard feelings softened when Salguero constructed a warm, winter-ready structure that welcomed all.)
Outside of Occupy, Salguero is known locally for running a “Survive and Thrive” Meetup group, which notes that it “is NOT a survival group that plans to work together in the event of a ‘Grid down’ scenario, but rather a group of individuals focused on SELF PRESERVATION AND CARE OF OUR LOVED ONES.” The group has over 100 positive recommendations from participants.
Salguero made headlines in October for passing out fliers outside the Burlington, Pennsylvania courthouse during the Ed “NJ Weedman” Forchion trial.
In a Phillyburbs.com report on the incident, Salguero was arrested for outstanding tickets that he claimed he paid long ago.
Perhaps those were the traffic tickets, then, that he was trying to have sorted in Jersey yesterday when he was arrested again. “According to investigators,” states a CBS report, “[Salguero] came to Somerdale Tuesday night to resolve two traffic tickets from 2000.”
He’s currently being held at the Camden County Correctional Facility on $32,000 full cash bail.
