There will be two chances for casino input at the Pennsylvania convention center, beginning on Thursday and going into Friday. Monday, April 8
Safety Meeting. The South of South Neighborhood Association will hold a meeting to plan the group’s activities and “improve safety throughout our community.”

Book reading. Judy Wicks, founder of the White Dog Café in West Philly, one of the first restaurants to feature organic, local, humane food, will read from her new book. That book, Good Morning, Beautiful Business: The Unexpected Journey of an Activist Entrepreneur and Local-Economy Pioneer, she says, explains what it takes to “do business differently.”

Casino Zoning Meeting. The Fishtown Neighborhood Association will hold a zoning meeting to discuss the potential Wynn casino that’s set to take up 70 acres along the Delaware River.

Tuesday, April 9
Lecture on Mass Incarceration. The Eastern State lecture series continues at Eastern State Penitentiary; this week about race and mass incarceration.

Zoning Committee Meeting. The Passyunk Square Civic Association will hold a zoning committee meeting.

History Workshop. A workshop on the history of Holmesburg in Northeast Philadelphia will be held, as it is every month before the Holmeburg Civic Association meeting.

Thursday, April 11
City Council. The Committee on Rules will hold a public hearing on amendments to the zoning and planning section of the Philadelphia Code.

Economic Development Meeting. The South of South Neighborhood Association will hold a meeting with its economic development team to figure out marketing the neighborhood and “activating vacant commercial spaces.”

Casino Input Meeting. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board recently announced it would hold multiple hearings for residents to give input on a potential new casino in Philadelphia.

Book reading. Primatologist Frans de Waal traces the biological roots of humanity in his new book The Bonobo and the Atheist: In Search of Humanism Among the Primates. He will read from the book and hold and question-and-answer session.

Scenic Philadelphia Event. Anti-urban blight group Scenic Philadelphia will host a fundraiser at the American Sardine Bar in Point Breeze to discuss recent activities.

Friday, April 12
Casino Input Meeting. Public input meetings will continue at the Pennsylvania Convention Center regarding a new casino in Philadelphia.
9am. Pennsylvania Convention Center, 1101 Arch St.
City Council. The Committee on Public Safety will hold a public meeting “to investigate and hold public hearings reviewing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole and its benefits to the criminal justice system, including the provision of adequate supervision of the offender while protecting the citizens of Philadelphia.”

City Council. The Committee on Streets and Services will hear testimony relating to a number of projects going on in Mannayunk, including adding Pretzel Park as a Farmers Market location and constructing at-grade crossings of train tracks. We expect everyone to be on the edge of their seats for this one.
