PhillyNow Calendar: civic events, Sept. 9-13

pwcalendarWhile there still isn’t much going on this week in terms of political involvement, there are some interesting classes, like the Free Library’s career skills workshop and the Fox Chase-sponsored artist meetup. It also looks like the South of South Neighborhood Association and Northeast Philly groups are doing the most organizing over the next week. So to the other neighborhood groups, step your meeting game up.

Fox Chase Art Group: This gathering allows for local artists to talk about their work with their peers, as well as feedback. Also a great way for artists to network.

SOSNA Safety Meeting:
The South of South NEighborhood Association holds this monthly meeting, where the recent uptick in bike theft will be discussed, along with measures to deter such activity.

Emergency Preparedness Workshop:
The Free Library of Philadelphia puts on this informative clinic, which promises to teach all about putting together a family emergency plan, should the need arise.

September 10

Senior Book Club: Perfect for any senior citizen looking to take back the reading time that they lost once the work grind hit.

Clutterers Anonymous Meeting: Despite what the outside world may say, cluttering can be a serious problem. If you’re thinking you might have a problem, don’t let shows like Hoarders make you feel silly.

Medicaid expansion discussion. A group of bipartisan lawmakers will discuss the potential of expanding Medicaid to Pennsylvania.

United Way Day of Caring Meet and Greet: Representatives from the corporate groups who volunteer for the United Way Day of Caring will be on-hand to talk about what their companies are doing to make a difference. For anyone looking to find out about the city’s more caring companies, this is for you.

SOSNA Triangles Gateway Project Committee Meeting: The South of South Neighborhood Association, together with Center City Residents’ Association and South Street West Business Association, is working to improve the Grays Ferry Avenue traffic triangles area between South Street and Bainbridge.

September 11

ESL Class: The Center for Literacy hosts this free, ongoing multi-level class.

Education, Literacy and workforce development hearing. The Pennsylvania House Democratic Policy Committee will hold a meeting on the state of Pennsylvania’s education system.

Lawncrest Rec Center Advisory Council: The Lawncrest Recreation Center is having an open council meeting, focusing on ways to make the facility more accessible to the community.

Skills Assessment Workshop: The Free Library of Philadelphia teaches all about changing careers and job searching. Perfect for anyone in this (unfortunately commonplace) predicament.

SOSNA General Membership Meeting:
The South of South Neighborhood Association will be soliciting nominations for candidates for the Board of Directors, as well as volunteers for the Election Committee. After nominations, there will be a discussion of property taxes and appeals, including the status of First-Level reviews, AVI releif measures, and BRT appeals.

September 12

Farm Stand: Jeanes Hospital plays host to a great farmers’ market-style farm stand that features tons of fresh, locally-sourced fruits, vegetables, eggs, cheeses and more. Jeanes Hospital put on the event as a way to promote healthy eating, and products are supplied through local distributor Common Market.

State of Working Pennsylvania report. State Sen. Mike Sturla (D-Lancaster) will be in town to discuss a new report on Pennsylvania’s job growth.

September Yappy Hour with QVK9:
QVK9 — a Queens Village group of dog owners — host this canine-friendly happy hour at local restaurant Kennet, with half off beer and wine.

Councilman Kenyatta Johnson Annual Oldies in the Park: Councilman Johnson brings Bringing families and neighbors together for a night night filled with food, fun, music and dancing.
