Pennsylvania Resorts to Yard Sale to Raise Cash
Well, it’s finally come to this. Perpetually short on funds, Pennsylvania is auctioning off a bunch of junk to try to make ends meet. Included are all kinds of weird, random stuff; items taken in drug seizures, business supplies from stores bought up by PennDot and plenty of old office equipment. From the Inky: Thousands of items, among them wheelchairs...

UPDATE: Bodies Found in Delaware
Early this morning, two bodies were seen in the Delaware while a salvage barge worked to raise the duck boat from the river floor. One of them has been recovered and identified as Dora Schwendter, a 16-year-old Hungarian tourist. They were originally spotted at “4:45 a.m. off Pier 80 at the foot of Snyder Avenue,” according to the Inky. The remains were eventually...

Councilmembers Bill Green and Maria Quiñones-Sánchez have awarded raises to several staff members, Catherine Lucey reported yesterday on the Daily News’ Philly Clout blog. According to Lucey: Councilman Bill Green this month gave raises to five of his staffers, including a $30,000 bump to his Chief of Staff Sophie Bryan, bringing her salary to $100,000....
Continue ReadingProsecutors Want Longer Sentence For Fumo
We were walking to the Tasker-Morris stop the other day and noticed Vince Fumo’s office is for sale. And not only that, but the “Vince Fumo Is Retired” sign has been removed! What gives? Anywho, last we heard from the guy, besides his whole “going to jail in Kentucky” thing, he was still thinking about running for his state senate seat. He put out the...

Wow. In the end, it’s good news: A Central Pennsylvania judge rescinded a court order that demanded that two newspapers delete information from their archives. The info was about criminal cases that were later expunged from the record, which means, among other things, a job applicant doesn’t need to tell a prospective employer about an arrest or conviction. It...
Continue ReadingDiving for Missing Duck Boat Tourists Called Impractical
An underwater search for two Hungarian tourists missing after a duck boat was run over by a barge yesterday has been called off, at least for now. Anyone who was watching this story yesterday – as it went from uninformed comedy to ‘oops this is actually a tragedy’ on some blogs and comment boards – knows that 35 duck boaters were pulled from the Delaware...
Continue ReadingLibraries’ Funding Cut In State Budget; 2 New Libraries Dedicated to Assholes To Be Constructed
Pennsylvania libraries are being cut 9 percent and one-thousand (and one) government employees will be losing their jobs after Rendell’s just-signed budget, but only the 1,001st, who lost his job all on his own, is getting a nice parting gift. Yep, that government operative is Arlen Specter. And for the sake of irony (we assume) Rendell’s budget includes...

Donte Johnson Sobs as He Enters Court
When 18-year-old Donte Johnson entered Courtroom 306 this morning, he looked nothing like the guy in the video footage that streamed across television news for days prior to his arrest on June 16 for the June 2 rape and murder of 21-year-old Sabina Rose O’Donnell. Johnson didn’t look at the judge. Instead, face crumpled, he craned his neck around to face...
Continue ReadingFox News Dominates Ratings, Opens A New Media Niche
Considering that 86% of the city’s residents voted for Obama in 2008, voting as a Philadelphia republican in a sea of liberals isn’t always easy. To ease the pain during these tough radical times, Fox News tries to give much-needed support to republicans by providing infamously conservative talk programs, although the cable channel prides its news...
