Philly isn’t the only town with dying daily newspapers

Add San Francisco to the list. And let me preface my following remark with this statement: I make my living from the web, but I’m no web triumphalist. Until news organizations start generating enough money from web operations to support a reasonably sized newsroom, I don’t see how I could be. Yes, the audience is fleeing to the web, but their dollars haven’t. It’s a conundrum.

Still, it’s hard for me to see Hearst threaten to close the San Francisco Chronicle even while they’re doing this…

Vega said plans remain on track for the June 29 transition to new presses owned and operated by Canadian-based Transcontinental Inc., which will give the Chronicle industry-leading color reproduction.

…and not think that maybe we’ve arrived at a point where the buggy whip manufacturers have decided to start tricking out the buggy whips with extra-nice leather.
