That anti-Islam speaker at Temple

Geert Wilders will speak tonight at Temple. The guy is seen as something of a free speech crusader by many American conservatives because he denounces Islam — not just Muslim extremists, but the whole religion — producing an angry backlash from Muslims and liberals and, for a time, a ban on travel in the UK because of the short anti-Islam film, Fitna, that he made. He’s a bit of a jerk.

Tonight’s speech at Temple has produced the usual assortment of backlash and defense. First, the defense:

David Horowitz, of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, which funded the event, issued a letter asking university officials to disregard the concerns of the Muslim students.

“The Temple community should reject the call by the MSA to censor free speech on the Temple campus, and should recognize it for what it is – an assault on the right of all Americans to have a democracy that is inclusive, tolerant and respectful of the rights of others,” he wrote.

What’s interesting about this is that conservatives so vigorously defend Wilders’ speeches in the name of “a democracy that is inclusive, tolerant and respectful of the rights of others.” By that definition — and certainly by American standards — Wilders is anything but a small-d democrat.

Wilders, after all, has called for a ban on the Koran in the Netherlands. He has also proposed a tax on headscarves, in order to discourage Muslim women from practicing their faith as they choose. He doesn’t believe that a “moderate Islam” is possible — extremism is the true version of the faith — so he wants to eradicate that faith from his society.

Now because I’m pretty devoted to the First Amendment, I think Wilders should be allowed to have his say tonight — same as I think Nazis, Klan members, flat earthers and other kooks should be able to have their say. But I’m bewildered at American conservatives who celebrate Wilders as a free speech hero when he wants to deprive his fellow citizens of their most basic right to freely practice their religion.

Here’s a hint, guys: Real civil rights heroes don’t attain that status by trying to deprive rights to others.

Devastating. That about says it all. Well done!

I’d like to see him speak — to a totally empty, audience-free, protester-free room.

    What an ignorant article.

Islam allows lying, rape and terrorism. It calls for Muslims to fight and kill Jews to reach judgement day. It is a religion of war, that is no better than Nazism. Go Wilders!

I disagree with the one sided aspect of this blog. The Netherlands is not a large country; they are suffering a huge influx of Muslim immigrants who are imposing Sharia law into the daily life of it’s citizens. The free speech laws are limited and many Netherlanders (if thats the word for them – excuse me) are unable to speak up. The intent is not to eradicate the Muslim culture as your blog suggests, but to put a freeze on the massive immigration of Muslim’s in order to allow this country to strengthen it’s constitution and free speech laws so that they are not overrun with tolerance laws. Read up man (or woman).

The Horowitz Freedom Center is just a propaganda machine for zionist ideals. If you look closely they do a good job of going places to bash islam specifically. The people who run the organization are primarily zionist jews who instead of building bridges want to destroy peoples perceptions of islam and manipulate people who are “conservatives” and dictate this as free speech. Its seriously just a propaganda machine.

I was at the Wilders speech last night, and I feel like the Philadelphia media is trying to make the event seem more open and less threatening than it was. Not only were no backpacks allowed, but no bags of any kind were allowed, and every person who entered was both patted down and had a metal detecting wand run over them. Wallets, pockets, and any outerwear was removed and searched. During the event, security strolled up and down the aisles, leaning in and scrutizining anyone who was taking notes, or otherwise moving around. When a student violated the q-and-a format (by attempting to give a short statement), a group of people surrounded him, began talking loudly over him to drown him out, and physically pressed him back into his seat. Yes, some students did shout insults – but the characterization of the atmosphere as ‘turning nasty’ is false. No students did anything threatening, or even did more than raise their voices; yet the q-and-a was cut short after a single student who indicated he wanted to ask a question insulted him instead. On the way out of the building, students were continually told by security to move faster, keep moving, as they walked alongside them. As there was nearly a full house, but only a single door to exit through, their commands were hard to heed.

You say I lie about islam and is religion of Peace, no its a religion of peices, body peices. There is a saying in the middle east. First comes Saturday, then comes Sunday. First the Jews then the Christains.

-Mohammed–married Aisha when she was at the ripe old age of 6 years old and he was the tender age of 57 years old. He got her into his house (you know what I mean) when she reached 8 years and 9 mohths.

-Mohammed married his own adapted son’s wife, we call this INCEST today, back then Mohammed called it LUST

I know it blows your mind, Please,Please read the Koran, their own holy book to see if I lie, read the Sura and the Haidth there you will see the horrors and also go into these sites.

Well written article. Everyone talks about free speech and this clown is denoucing the Islamic religion and creating hatred. How is that free specch? He compared the quran to Hitlers book. He wants to ban muslims from comming to his country. He also wants to tax muslim women wearing scarves. It just like what Hitler did to jews and now in the name of free speeech. Its amazing how David Horowitz, said that MSA is against democracy what is he against then. He is against everything this Country was built on. what about freedom of religion. Isn’t that a constitutional right. If it was a muslim bashing christainity and judaism the event would have been long canclled. Glad his speech was cut short. Creating hate is not educational Temple Univerity. How can a university so diverse allow such a controversial figure to speak and now columbia is next.
