Is Philly’s ACORN office really blameless?

The BigGovernment.com team that brought you videos of ACORN offices behaving badly is back at it. Despite claims that the “investigative reporters” posing as a prostitute and pimp were turned away from the offices here, the website today released a new video it claims contradicts accounts they were “tossed out” of the Philly offices.

From Fox News:

“At no point were we kicked out and at no point were we asked to leave,” O’Keefe told reporters at the National Press Club in Washington. “Why did the Philadelphia press report were we kicked out?”

The new eight-minute video depicts O’Keefe and Giles entering ACORN’s Philadelphia office and meeting with Conway-Russell. O’Keefe and Giles are seen speaking with Conway-Russell, but audio portions of the video are missing or edited in some portions. O’Keefe is heard mentioning he doesn’t “want to get in trouble with authorities,” and he mentions individuals will be frequently coming in and out of the building they hoped to secure, an apparent reference to the purported prostitution business to operate there. Clips of news reports featuring Conway-Russell and ACORN’s chief executive, Bertha Lewis, claiming the pair were kicked out of the office were then shown.

“This is another example of Fox Entertainment treating concocted video as if it’s actually news,” Levenson told Foxnews.com. “The police report we filed contemporaneously proves our clear understanding of this scam that was being portrayed.”

Scott Levenson, a spokesman for ACORN, reiterated a Sept. 14 statement issued by Carol Hemingway, the president of ACORN’s Philadelphia chapter, saying O’Keefe and Giles were asked to leave the office and that a police report was subsequently filed.

Philly ACORN’s claim that it detected the scam while it was in progress has been out there for weeks. The police report would seem to back it up. Why wait weeks to respond? And why do it with video that even Fox News observes had “audio portions of the video … missing or edited in some portions”?

Something doesn’t quite add up here. BigGovernment.com might be overplaying its hand.

  1. HPK Says: Oct 21 3:28 PM

BigGovernment.com knows exactly what they are doing.

    They posted this. . .

*UPDATE 2:24 PM EST** We muted the audio of the ACORN employees on the video released today due to ACORN’s legal attack upon us. We call upon ACORN to state publicly now that it has no objection to the public release of any its employees oral statements to us. If they are interested in the truth, why wouldn’t they do so?

  2. Terrekain Says: Oct 21 3:44 PM

HPK already said it Joel, in case you weren’t interested in watching Fox News.

The reason the audio drops out is because of Acorn has threatened legal action to silence O’keefe.

Since you’re so interested in the truth, how about asking Acorn to let O’keefe upload the entire 30 min tape?

    Not interested?

    You’re a coward, Joel.

  3. Andrew Says: Oct 21 3:44 PM

Did you read the release? Audio was left out due to pending litigation on the behalf of ACORN. The full unedited video is available upon ACORN’s approval?

For those of us who have reviewed all available information on the subject, it would appear ACORN has been caught red-handed lying with the assistance of the mainstream media.

  4. Alien Rants Says: Oct 21 3:45 PM

Here’s the timeline. O’Keefe and Giles spent 32 minutes in the ACORN office and were even given a follow-up appt. Then after they leave Conway calls HQ to find out about the referral. The pimp and ho were long gone before police were even called.
At that point they decided to make up the “verbal disturbance” nonsense to CYA. The complaint was by Keith Crosby who wasn’t even in the video.
Conway’s explanation was done after the fact and was read on a teleprompter. As the video reveals, there were several inaccuracies in her story.
They realized too late that they had been taken and tried to cover their tracks. Even without her audio, Conway perjures herself.
Kudos to the Weekly for coverage of the story.

  5. JoelisaRetard Says: Oct 21 3:50 PM

What doesn’t quite add up here is your “reporting,” Joel. The audio was muted and the video edited intentionally as a result of ACORN threatening to sue under wiretap laws.

Ask ACORN to let the videos be shown in full… you know O’Keefe has no problem with it, so why would ACORN?

    Let the truth be known!

  6. Andrew Says: Oct 21 3:55 PM

    Joel,
Everything that ACORN has said about this episode has been proven as a lie. You’d serve yourself well if you operated under the same assumption. Just sayin…

  7. Ron Says: Oct 21 4:00 PM

sounds like a lot of wishful thinking there Joel. the entertaining component here and what makes it so damn compelling is that they are using Alinsky techniques against the Alinskyites. Pay attention out there!

  8. Quenn Fonchey Says: Oct 21 4:00 PM

“BigGovernment.com might be overplaying its hand.” …No, it looks like they played you…again. You posted this article at 2:04 and already you’ve been burnt hard by them. Still haven’t learned your lesson? It’s this: ACORN lies…reporters need to check the facts.

  9. joel Says: Oct 21 4:07 PM

I’m glad they answered one question — a little dubious at their answer: Big Government won’t release audio unless ACORN lets them? Even with a lawsuit pending that seems less balls-to-the-wall than I’ve come to expect from Breitbart and co.

That still, of course, leaves this question unanswered:

Philly ACORN’s claim that it detected the scam while it was in progress has been out there for weeks. The police report would seem to back it up. Why wait weeks to respond?

Hey, you know, all props to Breitbart and company for pulling off the original videos. I’ve written previously that liberals probably shouldn’t spend too much time defending outfits that apparently go along with illegal activity.

But at the same time: Breitbart and company have an ideological case to make here. And because of that, I think it’s entirely fair to ask questions about how and why they do their reporting.

  10. Charlie Says: Oct 21 4:11 PM

One only needs to look at the discrepancies between the youtube video by Ms. Conway Russell and what is in the Acorn press releases and the Media Matters stories to see that she has a problem keeping her story straight.

The biggovernment video, even with Ms. Conway Russel’s audio muted (to avoid legal problems) more discrepancies between her story and actual events are obvious.

Somebody should tell her and Acorn that the 1st rule when you dug yourself into a hole is “stop digging!”.

  11. HPK Says: Oct 21 5:14 PM

I think that ACORN Philly filed a false police report. As the video shows, there was no disturbance. It will be interesting to hear what Katherine and ACORN Philly employees will say under oath, if it gets to that point.

  12. James Bond Says: Oct 21 6:48 PM

ACORN should be investigated for filing a false police report, immediately. If there was a disturbance it sure doesn’t appear to be happening, the report was filed after they left and got word from HQ to file a false police report. It didn’t appear that Ms. Giles and Mr. O’Keefe were chased out of the office upon arrival and ACORN and their cronies in the mainstream media have led us to believe. Mr. Breitbart and the team of Giles and O’Keefe have wisely laid a trap for ACORN and I’m sure the other videos in the archives of other office will only further discredit this already discredited and disgraced wing of the DNC with direct ties to the President. The media will try the spin of the video being edited but only a brainless fool would believe it will help ACORN. I believe Breitbart and O’Keefe cannot wait to be confronted with ACORN in a court of law so far they have all the evidence on their side and ACORN has proven what a filthy rotten corrupt organization they are. C’mon Bertha lets hear you try and defend office number 6 or 7 that has shown your organizations true colors. Let’s not forget the psycho in the San Bernadino office who also claimed she knew she was being hoodwinked but yet wasted 45 minutes of her workday answering questions and “playing” along. Only liberals are that dumb to fall for these lame excuses and further entangle themselves in their own webs of deceit.

  13. HPK Says: Oct 21 6:57 PM

    From O’Keefe at BigGovernment.com

“This begs many questions that Mr. Harshbarger should investigate:
    (1) Why did the Philadelphia office apparently waste taxpayer money and scarce police resources calling the police about a “verbal disturbance” by two people they were happy to help?

    (2) Why would ACORN file a police report after warmly helping us with our purported “prostitution business”?

    (3) Why would ACORN make a police complaint about a “verbal disturbance” when there was no disturbance?

    (4) Why did ACORN apparently call the police as many as 45 minutes after we left?

    (5) Why does ACORN apparently think that making and publishing an after-the-fact police complaint would cover up its willingness to help our “prostitution business” and its lies about what happened when we visited?”

  14. JackHammer Says: Oct 21 9:03 PM

I cannot understand why the liberal media defends Acorn. Defending the indefensible just makes them look preposterous. Sometimes you have to know when to fold ‘em …

  15. Moe Says: Oct 21 10:02 PM

I have a few points to make.

    1. As has already been pointed out the reason the audio is muted is because of a lawsuit filed by ACORN. ACORN are the ones responsible for preventing the audio from being heard by the public. If you think the lack of audio is fishy then take it up with ACORN.

    2. The Pimp and Hoe paid their visit to the Philly branch of ACORN on July 21 but the police report that was supposedly filed as soon as 45 minutes after they left is dated July 24.

    3. When visiting the Philly ACORN office the Pimp and Hoe used aliases as they had in all previous sting videos so the ACORN staff in Philly had no way of knowing their true identities but in the police report supposedly filed as soon as 45 minutes after they left (see point 2) their correct names are used.

    4. The entire lack of a verbal disturbance (which was cited in the police report) or them even being asked to leave.

When will people stop letting their political bias get in the way of commonsense and stop trying to make excuses for ACORN. They are OBVIOUSLY in the wrong in these cases and have done nothing but lie about it. Still it seems far to many people in the media are ready to accept anything that ACORN says as the whole hearted truth without any further questions asked while at the same time going so far as to make things up (Washington Times)to discredit two kids with a camera. Just because ACORN and many people in the media seem to share the same political ideology doesn’t mean ACORN should get a no questions asked free pass for doing BLATANTLY wrong things nor does it make trying to ruin the personal lives of two kids for disagreeing with that ideology right.
