Eugene Robinson’s problem with Tiger Woods’ adultery: A lack of diversity

I love Eugene Robinson, but his column this morning on Tiger Woods’ marital scandals plays like a conservative stereotype of liberal thinking:

If adultery is really about the power and satisfaction of conquest, Woods’s self-esteem was apparently only boosted by bedding the kind of woman he thought other men lusted after — the “Playmate of the Month” type that Hugh Hefner turned into the American gold standard.

But the world is full of beautiful women of all colors, shapes and sizes — some with short hair or almond eyes, some with broad noses, some with yellow or brown skin. Woods appears to have bought into an “official” standard of beauty that is so conventional as to be almost oppressive.

So the problem with Tiger Woods bedding a lot of young women is that they’re not diverse enough?

We’re at that point in the Woods scandal where the news is so pervasive that a lot of smart people feel like they’ve got to weigh in or be left behind in the cultural conversation — it would be like trying to pretend Monica Lewinsky didn’t exist in 1998. But there’s a danger for those smart people in that trying to say something smart about something very silly, they’ll just end up looking silly themselves. I’m not sure Robinson gets all the way there, but he comes close.

Sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants. Sometimes other parts want what those other parts want. It really is possible to overthink these things.

This is awesome. I mean the sheer obliviousness of it.

It’s not a stereotype. Most black lefties do think this way. I guarantee you it was the first thing black women thought. The reason they don’t care for Tiger is the reason they love Obama. It’s all about them.

Nietzschean, I absolutely agree with you. Besides who takes a color stick with them when they cheat its all in the hips (Happy Gilmore, golf related now watch people bit the hell out of what i say.)

Nietzschean — Who is “they”? “They”? “Most black lefties”? Conveniently lump humans together much?

Nietzchean, as a black woman, I can tell you this is not the first thing I thought. He’s already married to a white woman (and I really am not offended by that). Who was surprised that he’d continue to be attracted to non-black women?

However, if he had cheated with a black woman, I imagine there would be some people who’d say, “Oh, black women are good enough to fool around with, but not good enough to marry, eh, Tiger?”

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

I agree with Eugene Robinson….Hell, even some of the greatest pimps in history had diversity in they’re stables…..This is not shocking however, because Tiger has always had an issue with acknowledging his blackness..He is BLACK,yet he’s the only one that didn’t seem to notice. So his exclusive selection of white women is far deeper than just his “preference”, its a blatant denial of who he is……And thats the truth.

Not entirely fair critique of Robinson’s column, since it ignores the context to those two excerpted paragraphs. Read in context, the second of them isn’t as outlandish as represented here.

I don’t think Robinson was saying “the problem with Tiger Woods bedding a lot of young women is that they’re not diverse enough.” I think this generally thoughtful columnist was pointing to Woods’ apparent preference for Barbi doll types as evidence of a shallow individual who isn’t seeking “meaningful” relationships with women, but only going for sexual conquests and racking up the numbers. Nothing too profound, controversial, or consequential in such an observation. Would Robinson, or anyone else, think better of Woods if instead of “relating” to a dozen or more bimbos of whatever physical type(s), unbeknownst to his wife Woods had instead eloped to Argentina for a few days to be with just one woman, his true “soulmate,” as Governor Sanford of South Carolina did?
