Corey Haim is dead. So is our sense of proportion.Between the John Hughes orgy at the Academy Awards and the explosion of grief at the passing of Corey Haim, I realize that my generation is every bit as mawkish and self-obsessed as the Baby Boomers we used to mock. Hey Generation X: Weren’t we supposed to be a bit more cynical than this? In a good way? Lord help us all when Puck from the third season of the Real World finally bites it. Presidential proclaimations and long critical reappraisals in the New York Times will surely follow. |

It’s not about being cynical or not because, let’s face it, anyone that only half paid attention to Corey Haim recently (and all the other B or C or D list actors) isn’t surprised at his passing. It’s nostalgia. Face it, we’re getting old and we cling to those small things we enjoyed when we were young. I loved Lost Boys when I was a teen. I would never stomach it if I saw it new as an adult.
That and it’s just freaking sad to see the same story over and over again about what happens to these child stars.
I’m pretty sure you’re not gen x.

i would say gen xers stopped being born after 70…twenty five years after the boomers started being born in 45…

Who really cares. It’s just another addict who happens to be a washed out actor. American society seems to be addicted to the entertainment business. Thousands of people die every day beacuse of drug overdoses. This not news. If you want my condolences, report on the death of someone who was making a real diffence in society, a cancer researcher, a human rights activist or a prominent role model. A washed out drug addict, come on…

In defense of Baby Boomers, version 2 (late 50’s-60’s), let me just add for the record here that Gen X and the even more dumbly-appended Gen Y are both stupid. ;o/ The 70’s-80’s were a period of cultural pain that I had to wade through in the “best years” (ha) of my life and I won’t get those years back. Further- to blame “Gen X” for the tv shows they watched (that were written and produced by Baby Boomers no less) would be as idiotic as me calling a toddler of today a loser for watching Dora the Explorer.
Yeah, gawd forbid if we praise the great Hughes movies that gave some clarity to us GenXsters. We should have just scorned the aging actors for getting grey and gaining some weight.
And comparing us to the baby boomers? Puh-lease! We’ve had to endure 41 years celebrating Woodstock. I hardly believe Gen X has anything in the form of back-patting that is equivalent.
