Dear Phillies: A message from the 1985 Royals

Growing up in Kansas, one of my favorite sporting memories is of the Kansas City Royals’ 1985 World Series victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. What was memorable about that is that the Royals — like the Phillies today — were down 3-1 in the series. For games five and six, we expected the champagne to flow in the Cards’ clubhouse. But the Royals kept scrapping and — aided by a dubious umpiring call — came back, destroying John Tudor’s career along the way. This is what the Royals got:

It’s going to be hard, Phils fans. But it can be done. It really can.

And even if it doesn’t happen, the Yankees still suck.

Tonight: Pedro. But first: Cliff Lee.

Yeah. This is still awesome:

Barack Obama must be defeated

From Politico:

Barack Obama, campaigning in the key swing state of Florida, is seeking to capitalize on the excitement over the World Series-bound Tampa Bay Rays, telling a Tampa crowd he was “showing some love for the Rays,” several members of which joined him onstage.

On Oct. 11, Obama told a crowd in the City of Brotherly Love – the biggest city on the key swing state of Pennsylvania: “My White Sox are gone, so I’ll go ahead and root for the Phillies now.”

Yet in Tampa Monday afternoon, where he was introduced by Rays’ players Fernando Perez and David Price, Obama also seemed to express support for the Rays, telling the crowd that he had just met with several members of the team backstage.

“I have said from the beginning that I’m a unity candidate, bringing people together. So when you see a White Sox fan showing some love for the Rays and the Rays showing some love back, you know we’re onto something here,” Obama said.

Obama must think he has Pennsylvania in the bag and that Florida is still up for grabs. Screw the White Sox, anyway.

Holy cow!

When I went to bed at midnight, Tampa Bay was thrashing Boston. I thought we had our World Series opponent picked.

That was dumb of me, heh? But boy, baseball can be wonderful sometimes.
