Felicia loves Tilly Bloom’s 2D Jewelry
Handmade jewelry doesn’t often come inspired by legendary murders and Victorian ghost stories, but Tilly Bloom is hardly your average bead-stringer.
Her cheeky, detailed illustration jewelry lets you wear your darkest heart right on the outside: either in a literal chest x-ray necklace, or a surrealist teacup brooch filled to the brim with inquisitive eyes.
The lacquered necklaces lie flat against the collarbone–perfect for adorning bare summer styles while reminding you of your own mortality. Death haunts! PW Style caught up with Tilly and quizzed her mercilessly, even though she was in the middle of dragging boxes from one end of Brooklyn to the other.
Stats, please?
I’m Tilly Bloom, 23 years old. I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and have lived in the States for nearly 7 years.
My first trip to Philly was to be fingerprinted for my green card. I also ate a cheesesteak and visited the Mutter Museum, both of which I liked greatly.
Were you educated as an illustrator?
Nope. I’m self-taught in most things.
Your pieces have a Victorian/Edward Gorey-like dark quality. Do you seek inspiration in other artists who parodied Victorian life?
Not particularly, I tend to go straight to the source. The Victorians themselves had a great yet subtle sense of self-parody. Being from Edinburgh I’ve always had a strong sense of the past as slightly odd, dark and peculiar. With things around me such as The Burke and Hare, Greyfriars Bobby and many a Victorian Ghost Stories.
What is your favorite thing to wear in this hot weather?
Sunscreen. But I’m looking forward to my boots and overcoat, I’m not one for summer.
Where do you shop in Brooklyn for clothes and accessories?
I don’t really. I abhor clothes shopping. On Etsy.com I can find lots of splendid local designers, like Miss Bohl, Liinok and Kcoline.
Thanks so much, Tilly. Have fun with the boxes.
No problem, have a merry weekend!
