Project Runway Episode Two: Suede is a Bisexual Sagittarian
First, let’s set the record straight. We here at PW Style don’t hate Suede. Sure, his hair is technicolor and he talks about himself in the third person. And he may or may not be a big ol’ crybaby. And he maybe dresses a little like a certain deceased Nirvana member.
But, dude just made a bad first impression. Thanks to the glory of cable television and a migraine-induced day on the sofa, we were able to view the PR episode no less than five times since last week. And since then, Suede’s become a little more endeared ’round these parts.
So imagine our disgust when Gawker drew our attention to the leaked results of this week’s show (via Wikipedia) and had sweet Suede sent packing. Fingers and toes were crossed for the whole damn episode.
Delightfully, Wikipedia was wrong (listen up, PW fact-checkers!). Suede’s sticking around—at least till next week. And thank god, because we learned all sorts of funny tidbits about him (see post title). Our boy even won this week’s challenge and impressed guest judge (and our total hetero girlcrush) Natalie Portman with his fun little red and yellow frock.
This week’s challenge had the designers creating cocktail dresses for their models using environmentally friendly materials purchased by their models. Overall, the garments were disappointing. Even though Kenley’s dress was hella hot, she’s starting to get a little Christian Siriano with giant collars two weeks in a row.
Marc Jacobs wannabe Wesley was sent home for his atrociously overworked brown satin number.
Leanne was in the bottom two with an unnecessarily complicated dress in the same brown material as both Wesley and Keith.
Emily’s garment was embarrassingly teeny. Not even Tila Tequila could rock that.
Most of the dresses were short, tight and shiny and as the blissfully bitchy Nina Garcia pointed out, they looked cheap. Folks will likely argue that the designers had no control over their materials and this lead to the poor selection on the runway (and to tons ‘o bitching from Kenley and Stella), but it really shows a lack of ingenuity on the part of many designers. The goal of these challenges is to, in the words of Tim Gunn, “make it work.” Very few succeeded.
That being said, big ups to Blayne this week for his lovely black and pink dress (and for not annoying the fuck out of everyone with his “-licious” habit). After last week’s atrocity, we were glad to see he’s not a total hack.
Now, before we sign off this week’s ra-ra-recap, we have to shoot a little love to our alt-weekly friends across town at CP’s Critical Mass. Turns out they’re doing weekly Project Runway posts, too.

Challenge: Think Green
Guest Judge: Natalie Portman (!!!)
Winner: Suede
Loser: Wesley
PW Style Blog MVP of the Night: Blayne for shameless mocking of Stella’s leather love and for almost-kinda-sorta-maybe making us hate him less.
