Maureen Dowd mugs Dennis
Occasional PW scribe Dennis from Comedy Central and InDecision2008 is out in Denver, drinkin’ the Pepsi and going broke.
Download The Wire roundtable
A few weeks ago a panel discussion went down at the Museum of the Moving Image called “Making the Wire.”
Sorry to do this to you if you have work to do (I’m mid-Season 5, friends, caboosin’ up on Netflix, don’t spoil it for me) but you can download the whole convo now here.
It’s Richard Price, David Simon, Bunk, Ellis Carver and Lester. Go.
Shante, shante, shante!

Skip your happy hour plans next Thursday and make your way to Marathon Grill where they’ll be plenty or sips and snacks and, what’s best, FASHION. Rittenhouse Row organization invites you to view the stylings of their neighborhood’s boutiques and salons parading down the runway.
Steve Guttenberg’s Greatest Hits
Deal with it: I love Steve Guttenberg.
I know he’s alternately strange and weird in print and has a bit of a temper and is a total banana-tosser, but I can’t help but think we’d really enjoy splitting a bottle of champagne, a gram of cocaine and some “ironic” slow jams together.
Insane South Park/Steve Guttenberg/Incredible Hulk/Roy Lichtenstein mash-up.
Plus there was that time I worked in a restaurant and the dishwasher came out of the kitchen and cruised up to Steve Guttenberg’s table (it seems he’s always in Philly for gay film screenings or something) and was like, What UP, Mahoney?! and he was totally cool about it.
“Same sound, but completely different.” Heh heh.
The PC NSFW police got to me, but if you want to check out the Not Safe for All Work giggles (and you know that you do), clickety-clack here.
Apparently, 2 out of 3 Germans agree with me. They’re LOVING Police Academy 1 in Germany right now.

A very George Michael moment.
NYT: Crushed foodie dreams
A very sober outlook on opening and running your own restaurant in the New York Times is a solid read. Linda Lipsky of Broomall-based Linda Lipsky Restaurant Consultants, Inc. opens the story by talking about how when she taught a course called “So You Want to Open a Restaurant” at Temple her goal was to smash students’ dreams into a million little pieces.
But running a restaurant–especially living the Philly BYOB love dream–seems soOoOooo romantic, yes? Just a little place that’s all our own.
I’d love to hear from some crushed dreamers on how it went down for them in Philly.
R.I.P Blue Angel, Angelina’s, Felicia’s, Pasion, Cibucan, Opus 251, Adriatica, Rococo, Circa, Knave of Hearts, Minar Palace (c’mon now), and on and on.
Is there a conclusive list out there?
Reward Boutique Opens Sept. 5
Reward Boutique is finally opening in September. And they’re doin’ it with a Live Arts bang: Nicholas Hans is installing a live art installation that day from 4PM “until whenever he finishes.”
Let me hear your body talk
The internet is a buzz with talk of Heidi Montag’s new music video, Overdosin’.
Heidi’s a bit late to the Let’s-Get-Physical party. Philly porn-pop darlings, Sweatheart, conquered this video style months ago with so much more authenticity, flair, and hilarity. They bypass Heidi’s straight Danskin style for the real deal: track suits and legwarmers surely stripped off an 80s Jazzerciser (aka my mother in law).
Thanks Philly (especially Sweatheart) for always being a step ahead of the OC.
Haute Tamales!

Philly’s a great town but let’s be honest, all the great fashion samples sales skip right past us.
As a compulsive discount shopper, I’m simply devastated all the great sample sales happen in NYC. I enjoy the BoltBus just as much as the next laptop user (free wifi on the bus, haven’t you heard?) but I’m not making the trek to NYC just to push my way through some discounted Missoni or what have you.
Thank goodness for HauteLook: online sample sales! And it’s the good stuff too: Development, Mike & Chris, C&C California. Sign up quickly and you’ll be just in time to hit the end of the Robert Rodriguez sale.
All items are usually over 40% off and sometimes up to 90% off! I scored an awesome Diane Von Furstenburg dress a few weeks ago and gifted a makeup obsessed bestie (Jaime W(e)) with a Stila eyeshadow palette; all treasures from previous sales.
Let me brick it down for you…

John Houshmand’s White Brick club chair is featured in September’s Trend Watch in Metropolitan Home magazine.
I’m very drawn to this chair; it’s so Ready Made chic. And although the chair lists for $21, 875 it is a very accessible piece of high design for any of those true DIYers out there. Philadelphia DIYers especially, since a pair of these club chairs would look so fab in a South Philly “backyard” (read: concrete slab). Imagine how charming these would be after a few seasons when moss finally creeps up the sides! My design daydreams are getting the best of me. It’s time for you to get to work and do your lincoln-log best at brick laying your way to a new living room set.
Gifting: When Friends Breed
Like when they marry, you’ve got to figure out how to give good presents (read: practical) without feeling like you’re trying to act all like you never dropped acid with them or anything.
I’ve finally found the perfect part-of-the-gift for T & R at BabyWit.
