Squid gallery

Last post about the giant squid pattern, I swear. From here on out, this post will be updated with pictures of all the different squids people have made. And oh please keep sending them to eguendelsberger@philadelphiaweekly.com, I get such a kick out of seeing the little ways people tweak the pattern. It’s practically Darwinian.

The original!

Cat-loving squid from Mandy, via email

Angry-looking squid from Matthew

Bo Squiddley, by bunsen_h; and it looks like it will be in good company with a couple of other seriously dorky stuffed guys in the background. Also a new adorable 1/10 scale squidlet from bunsen_h!

familyAnd a family portrait!

From Amanda, who also made one as a boyfriend present (with the good idea of filling the ends of the arms with beads or rice)

A squid named Demsela Howard, from Marie; it was her very first sewing project (ambitious!)

Pink squid from Julie K; she says her name is Lumpy.

Amy says: “I made one out of old t-shirts because I had no fabric and an abundance of XL shirts (that were given to me by my robotics coach) that I was never going to wear.  So here’s a picture of me and my squid made out of old robotics team t-shirts. I named it Robby.” Hell yeah, science girls.

Another first sewing project! “I thought I’d send a picture of Sir Squidimus (named for Sir Didymus from Labrynth) along for the gallery of squids.  Oh, and my sister made a squid, too (she made her own pattern).  His name is Carl and he’s the one made with the Yoda fabric.”

Sheik Yerbouti made Cthulhu for a friend for her birthday.

Another squid for a friend (SquEd, made for Ed)… with the addition of googly eyes!

Veronica made this big green guy for her kids.

Squid-Billie, by Nicole. I love the HUGE EYES!

Oh god, this is my favorite one yet: “My name is Billy Arrowsmith. I made my own squid as a present to my wonderful girlfriend Julie, for our one-year anniversary of dating. She was, if I do say so myself, very pleased with it. Even if her parents think I’m a little bit weird.” Well done, sir!

burningman

OK I’m a bad blogger, I haven’t been posting people’s pictures! The bunch above are from Lara Coffin:

I made 4 squids for our camp at Burning Man called Squid Row. They were a great success and loved by all!! People cuddled with and slept on them all week!

It was my first official sewing project, but I am crafty in general, so I knew I could figure it out. I stuffed them with shredded memory foam I bought from Ebay. It was the perfect stuffing. I highly recommend it for other projects.

My 6 month old son Elliott often went to battle with the squid. He really liked to chew the tentacles. I think the squid liked it too ;)

getwell

This one was emailed in by Tokoz:

My friend was recently diagnosed with a cancer (one of the relatively easily treatable kinds, thankfully), and I decided a giant squid would make a good get-well gift. I didn’t have enough butter yellow minky fur to make a full-size squid, but I managed to have juu-uust enough fabric to manage 2/3 size (which is still a respectable 6 feet total). The get-well squid was a great success, and my friend is well on the way to recovery. Thanks for posting the pattern!

You’re welcome! Glad your friend is doing well!

From Amber Duncan:

Here is the squid I made for my husband for his birthday. He is obsessed with all things cephalopod. This is the first sewing project I have ever done and I think it turned out really well. Thanks for the instructions!

pleather

From Laurie Frans:

Wanted to share this with you and thank you for your pattern it made it possible. My 18 year old loves him and so do her friends she has plans on making many more.

Cuddles

From Heather:

I don’t know if you’re still collecting squid-pictures, but this is Cuddles. I had a blast making him, so thanks for sharing the pattern!

green

From Josh:

I call him, Squib. anyway I love the patter and tried my hand at it. I don’t sew. Oh I plan on using this patter for a art class. I hope you don’t mind. It’s not the best, I just used material that was lining around.

Horatio

From Imogen:

Thankyou so much for posting the absolutely fantabulous squid pattern! A nickname of mine happens to be Squid so when I saw it linked from Nut and Bee I just had to make one. His name is Horatio and I love him to pieces. I have inspired much jealousy in my friends, too :D Oh, and by the way, this is an Australian squid. Your pattern has made it Down Under!

Tanya made one for her son, with the good (if somewhat Georgia O’Keefe) idea of allowing for the thing to be washed:

This squid is a big Christmas present hit with my son.

The pink velour was a pain to work with, but it feels great. I added a zipper mouth because squids should be able to eat, one should be able to add more stuffing, or maybe wash the whole squid if you can remove most of the stuffing from the body.

Thanks!

Holy crap, Becca made FOUR:

thanks so much for posting this pattern. i made one for all my siblings for xmas this year. as you can see i was very very tired last night.

I’m impressed!

quilted

It’s a 9-foot Christmas squid from Shawn Holt:

You have helped me make what I am sure is going to be my daughters favorite Christmas gift. She wanted one of Cassandra Nguyen’s but they are $2500.00 So I made her this one with your help. It’s 9 feet long and made of a quilted material and heavy courderois, with a hidden pocket inside.

Oh hey, Cassandra Nguyen’s pattern looks a lot like the one I spotted on vacation in L.A., I bet that was one of hers!

I considered starting to sell squids made from my pattern when I first drew it up, but after actually constructing the damn thing I decided that it required so much in the way of time, effort and materials that it wouldn’t be worth my while to actually make and sell them unless I could get several hundred dollars per squid, which seemed outlandish at the time. But it does appear that Nguyen is getting quite a bit of money for her big squids (and looks like she’s a much better sewer than I am), so good for her! Maybe I should have given it a try!

That is one of Nguyen’s squids. She had a show at Royal T a while back. I haven’t actually seen one up close, but your pattern was a great starting point for the one that I made. Your right they are tedious, especially the legs.
