What To Do This Weekend

Happy Friday, kids! It’s gonna be a scorcher. Gross, right? I thought so, too. Here’s what’s happening in town this weekend:

FRIDAY:

//Filthy Art Show Reception @ Studio 34: “Visual art works by Krisanne Baker, Maggie Nowinski, Diedra Krieger, Steve Pauley; Water soundscape mixed live by Radere. After Party with DJ Modesta” Deets here!

SATURDAY:

//Handmade Nation Our own Emily G mentioned this yesterday or the day before when free tix were going out…. but it’s totally worth mentioning a second time:

“Handmade Nation documents a movement of artists, crafters and designers that recognize a marriage between historical techniques, punk and DIY (do it yourself) ethos while being influenced by traditional handiwork, aesthetics, politics, feminism and art…

In 2006 first-time director Faythe Levine traveled to 15 cities, interviewing 80 individuals. Levine captured the virtually tight-knit community that exists through websites, blogs and online stores and connects to the greater public through independent boutiques, galleries and craft fairs.”

SUNDAY:

//catFlowers at Crafty Balboa So, we’re all fans of indie craft shows here, right? Our fav local ladies catFlowers are going to be showing at Crafty Balboa in South Philly. Follow for deets on twitter here and facebook info here!

How to get rid of blank walls

OK, you are no longer living in a dorm. You do not lead a completely joyless life. Nor do you live most fully when playing World of Warcraft. Failing to put anything on bare, white walls, like in the picture above, sends a signal to potential sex partners that you may be at least one of the above. So what to do with bare white walls to make a good impression?

PAINT:

Obviously, painting is a good option if you’re allowed; a hardware-store gallon of paint is only about $20, painting most rooms only takes a few hours and not having your wall be dorm-room white does wonders for your quality of life. But use really bright colors sparingly; they look pretty on the paint chip but are way darker than you’d expect when covering an entire room.

ART:

Hanging art is another option. However, keep in mind that if you’ve seen a piece of art in the apartments of more than a couple people, you should maybe keep looking for something more interesting. For example:

None of the above posters should be found in an adult home. The message you want to send is “I am interesting and have my post-collegiate shit together, potential sex partner” not, “Dude, I just discovered this SWEET underground artist called Dali, oh no WAY you’ve heard of him too? BTW, don’t you totally love beer/college/some movie/faux-arty lesbians? Because I totally love beer/college/some movie/faux-arty lesbians.”

Geepers Peepers

I like my glasses, but sometimes they make me a little self concious.  One time I was walking around and I swear some guy shouted ‘Hey Old Lady!’ I was a little caught off guard to say the least. More recently during Pride Weekend a flamboyant guy told me that ‘Glasses are having a moment.’ I like to agree with that comment more than the former.

Dan Levy of The Hills Aftershow seems to agree as well. In his newsletter from this week, he lists his favorite places to get frames and lenses from.

One of the shops, Oliver Peoples he suggests has the sunglasses from from (500) Days of Summer Star, Zooey Deschanel. I’m not sure how I feel about Zooey’s character in (500) Days of Summer, but I do know that I love the glasses that bare Zooey’s name. Also, Leighton Meester has been spotted wearing glassses. Having a moment? I’d say so.

TopShop has a Horror Girl Collection that sort of frightens me. Something that I’m not afraid of? The Shrunken Schoolboy Blazer from the Gap. It’s so cute!

Free crafty tickets

If you’re interested in the independent-crafter scene that’s going on right now, Linda Johnson at Little Flower designs (you may have seen her stuff at Art Star or any number of neat-stuff-selling stores) has some free tickets to give away to the Philly screening of Handmade Nation, a documentary about the current “Make stuff!” scene.

Handmade Nation documents a movement of artists, crafters and designers that recognize a marriage between historical techniques, punk and DIY (do it yourself) ethos while being influenced by traditional handiwork, aesthetics, politics, feminism and art…

In 2006 first-time director Faythe Levine traveled to 15 cities, interviewing 80 individuals. Levine captured the virtually tight-knit community that exists through websites, blogs and online stores and connects to the greater public through independent boutiques, galleries and craft fairs.

Looks totally neat for people like or make handmade stuff, so don’t let free tickets go to waste! The screening is at 6pm on August 1st, after an “entrepreneurs convention” (who knew entrepreneurs had conventions?) at the Convention Center.

Handmade Nation

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go get my hands on one of these:

Awwwwwwwwww yeah.

Facelift. Backlift.

NBC has relaunched their websites. NBC10 has had a makeover as well as many of the stations in larger markets.  Being the broadcast nerd that I am, I decided to check out some larger market’s facelifts. Dallas Fort Worth’s website struck me as odd. It seems that a new feature of the site is that the station has a status a la facebook or twitter. Check out Dallas’ status as of last night.

Granted, there was a story about someone licking drugs off the floor in Texas, but this status just seemed odd.

Philly.com has pictures up of the Peek A Boo review, a neo burlesque review that performed at the World Live Cafe this past Saturday.  Side note: I call my grandmother Peek-A-Boo.  I wonder what she’d think of the show.

People.com has pictures of trends that Celebs have been wearing.  Would you rock them? The Huffington Post asks what celeb wears backless dresses the best, and The Times of London has an article on a study that women are becoming more beauiful.

I Wear My Sunglasses at Night

It’s summer time and hot damn, I have a great tan. I can’t fathom not having a great pair of shades to go with it, and boy –do I own a million.

With this in mind, we gals at PWstyle are having an internal email chain goin’ about sunglasses at the moment. Some interesting questions are poppin’ up (when do I know when my sunglasses are too big for my face?) and I don’t think I’ve ever had a real dialogue about it before! As a girl who owns a pair of vintage white shades half the size of her face, I’m open to all sorts of tinted-eye wear, but I don’t know about everyone else.

I found this article about finding shades to suit your face… but I’m not entirely convinced. So, what are your thoughts, Philadelphia? Comment and let us know! We asked the troops on Twitter, too… so expect an e-poll to pop up in a few days!

I’ll be your seven-day fool

I haven’t had a physical calendar for a while. Since I’m disorganized enough that I require an electronic calendar with an alarm by my side at all times to keep it together, having another big one that has to stay at home on the wall always seems a little pointless. It’s just another reminder that I have a semi-functional brain when I look over and realize that I haven’t turned the calendar page since February or I’m still looking at the Sudoku-a-day from, like, four and a half months ago.

But here are a few options that, while they may not be entirely useful for penciling in friends’ birthdays, are beautiful, super-functional, or both.

This ink calendar is by Oscar Diaz, a Spanish designer. He says:

“Ink Calendar” make use the timed pace of the ink spreading on the paper to indicate time.

The ink is absorbed slowly, and the numbers in the calendar are “printed” daily. One a day, they are filled with ink until the end of the month. A calendar self-updated, which enhances the perception of time passing and not only signaling it.

Unsure how accurately the capillary action can be predicted, but still, what a beautiful thing to have on your wall. The inks are different colors related to each season. Unfortunately, the ink calendar is not in production at the moment. Someone make this, please!
