Sliimy: my newest obsession.

So, I have to hand it to Perez Hilton. Normally I’d roll my eyes thinking of his pink blinged out website, but my room-mate swears by him… and upon further inspection, he’s actually covered some musicians I reeeeally like this year. Go Perez! He covered the PS22 Chorus (aka the kids who sing on the Passion Pit album) and more recently, my newest obsession: Sliimy.

First things first: Sliimy is pronounced slim-ee (as in Slim Jim). What you need to know? Hm, well: He’s French, gay, looks like Prince, sings like a lady, and dresses like Elvis Costello. He also can’t properly pronounce the word birthday (”eh’s my bersstday”) and it’s adorable. In other words, he’s my new hero.

He has an awesome stop-motion music video for his new single: dig it!

Piggie Toes

Courtesy of the New York Times

Sunday’s New York Times had an article about running shoes called FiveFingers from a company called Vibram. These shoes are part of somewhat of a movement in the running shoe world. These shoes more closely resemble socks than thick soled running shoes. Quite the departure from New Balances. The thought is that it’s better to run as close to barefoot as possible. I’m not so sure I agree.  I’ve tried to run on the treadmill barefoot and it hasn’t ever felt right.  These socky looking shoes are pretty cool looking though.

The New York Times also has a video up from Bill Cunningham, who has a voice that I love.  In this video, Cunningham talks about the women he’s observed walking around NYC in what seem to be evening dresses. I think they’re just longer sundresses, but I love Bill’s take on things.

At the Daytime Emmys there was an Oscar on the carpet. There was also an Elmo and a Big Bird! Sure, there were some talkshow hosts and actresses as well, but the fact that Sesame Street was there and on the red carpet is something that I find highly entertaining.

Somehow I wasn’t aware of Lilliana Vazquez and the fact that she’s everywhere and doesn’t sleep until now. Not only does she run a blog called CheapChicas.com – which helps you wear cute clothes and accessories without breaking the bank,  but she also wrote every single style article on NBC10.com that perked my interest. Her write ups include pieces on Ankle boots, and gorgeous jewelery including great baubles and even necklaces that will help you remember important dates.

Mini Kensington

I have a thing for papercraft; in my former life as a receptionist, I used to kill down time by assembling tiny pandas and turntables and parrots, the patterns for which were offered for free from Yamaha for some reason (note: if you have a menial-type job in which you may be asked why the fuck you’re making an okapi, I recommend that you maybe not go to that site; it’s an amazing resource but I strongly suspect that my little animals were a big factor in my getting canned).

But if you enjoy the zen of Elmer’s glue/x-acto knife/glue-tab-A-to-space-B assembly, have local pride and are not on the clock, check out Daymaker’s patterns for standard Kensington/Fishtown/Port Richmond sights (have I mentioned that I’m boycotting the term Port Fishington?). There’s lunch carts, Kenzinger trucks, Fishtown rowhouses (complete with tiny star bolts), a modern interloper, even-teenier-than-usual Trinities and a bunch more that are surprisingly evocative of the area.

They say they even have a teeny little Memphis Taproom, although that pattern doesn’t seem to be available yet, and have a custom option where it appears you can get a quote on your own Philadelphia home, place of work or favorite bar. Yay! Although we imagine it’s waaaaay more expensive to get something custom than the $3-$5 it costs to get one of the above prefab patterns printed on card stock and mailed to you.

I’m imagining the miniature train set running through a little country village that our neighbors set up around Christmas every year when I was growing up, the idea of popping in a few lunch trucks amidst all the glittery fake snow makes me very happy.

What To Do This Weekend

Here’s a sample of what’s happening in the City of Brotherly Love on Saturday and Sunday:

//Grasshopper’s 3rd Anniversairy Party It seems someone in the Philadelphia Examiner has this one covered pretty well at the moment:

Join Grasshopper boutique to honor its 3rd anniversary with a special store-wide sale and celebration on Saturday, September 5th. Located in the heart of the Diamond District, right off of Washington Square, Grasshopper’s interior is unlike any other store, it is a combination of a mix of high luxe, cozy backwoods, and a ‘70s family den, with a forest mural and cozy working fireplace. Connected to American Mortals, one of the most exciting and avant-garde hair salons in Center City makes this pair a perfect one-stop shopping experience. New hair and new clothes, what could be better?

All the deets can be found here. Check it out!
Roundup:

What else this weekend? Hm, well, I have to miss it, but go and enjoy this for me: The Flaming Lips are playing somewhere on Penn’s Landing as part of the big Making Time dance party. And word on the street is that it’s Philly’s First Annual Brazillian Cultural Weekend and that there will be events on South Street on Saturday and Sunday. Deets can be found here. Have a good one!

TWITTERPOLL: 08/28/09

This week’s TWITTERPOLL was inspired by my post, An Ode to IKEA. It didn’t get many comments, but I was thrilled to see it was a big RT (retweet, for you technical Luddites) in the Tweesphere, and that many other 20-somethings sympathized! After stressing (whining) about the gripes of moving and assembling furniture, I decided to ask what everyone actually likes in their place.

This week we asked:

aaaaaaaaaand all the cool kids said:

Thanks to everyone who participated! Follow us on Twitter to be in next week’s TWITTERPOLL.

Peanut Butters?

While it’s not really an average bargain, Vogue lists most wanted items for fall – all under $500. For the glossy that has traditionally set fashion standards, it’s an unexpectedly low threshold.

Courtesy of the New York Times

The New York Times has an article on jellies and how they are making a comeback. What sets these shoes apart from past Jellies creations is the designer take on things. I once had a dream that my old school Jellies disappeared and became Peanut Butters. They were sort of the same as these new school Jellies, now that I think about it. The NY Times style section also has an article that isn’t big on changing British designs.  The classics are being revamped, and not everyone is happy.

Self magazine staffers all seem to be sporting coral nail polish, while Daily Candy unlocks their doors with cool keys.

I’d rather be with cupcakes

We mentioned this a while back, but the Buttercream cupcake truck that got everybody squealing and flapping their arms when it was first announced has now gotten all its permits in order and ducks in a row and launches today. Clearly, they will do this in the cutest way possible, announcing:

OFFICIAL LAUNCH

FRIDAY AUGUST 28, 2009.

NOON. LOVE PARK.

BE THERE OR BE WITHOUT CUPCAKES.

And now you know! Now that the truck is mobile, you can track its location via Twitter, specialty-food-cart tracking being one of the very few legitimate uses of Twitter in my judgmental, wave-of-the-future-hating eyes.

BTW, did I mention we had a Twitter? It is also legitimate.

Talley ho!

Oh god dammit. I had to work, but I hope to god it was this black cape, seen here at the Met Costume Institute Gala:

Because how many black capes can one man own? Wait, don’t answer that. Confirmation from anyone who was there?

abstract body art

So a friend of mine just got a new tattoo, and I am now in love with her artist, Amanda Wachob of New York’s Dare Devil Tattoo. In addition to some really nice examples of more standard stuff, there’s a series in her portfolio that looks like brushstrokes permanently painted on the body.

God, isn’t that just SICK? I’ve always thought that the urge to get another tattoo decreases by inverse squares as time elapses since your last one; I haven’t particularly felt the itch to get another tattoo since I was like 19, but man, the compulsion is back. These are just so unlike any others I’ve seen.

You can apparently just give the lady a general area and say “Go to town!”, which is also kind of appealing in a kind of terrifying way.

Extra, Extra

While I am a blogger and I do love broadcast, I still have a special place in my heart for newspaperss. Maybe that’s why I love these accessories that were featured on Nylon’s website.

Kate Moss and Topshop are launching a new site for fall/winter. While the site being posted does mean that summer is drawing to a close, it’s worth a look anyway. Also, I’m not a huge Kate Moss fan, but the slideshow of pictures when you first visit Kate’s section of the site are quite striking.

If you have two puppies – I tend to call dogs puppies regardless of age – that would like to tie the knot, make sure you check out the Largest Dog Wedding, scheduled to happen in Woodstown, New Jersey this Saturday.

NBC10 isn’t sure how they feel about plunging necklines. What do you think? I usually don’t mind, unless the woman is old. Saggy clevage isn’t cute.

The Frisky featured a product that will always make room for cupcake filling. Yumm. I’m a fan of baking…I think if I had one of these everyone would wonder just how I got so fancy.
