By 7:45 p.m. Sunday night, vintage vixens and oh-so dapper dudes could be seen lining almost two full blocks of Arch St. outside of the Trocadero where Philly’s renown pin-up photographer, Celeste Giuliano held her second annual Pin-up Peep Show/Pinups for Pitbulls Fundraiser.
Having sold out the Troc Balcony last year, thankfully they made sure to rent out both floors of the theater this time around. Inspired by the cabarets and supper clubs of the 1930s-40s, the event featured live music from Drew Nugent & The Midnight Society whose cool, retro sound certainly made you want to try your luck at swing dancing and, of course, performances from several of Philly’s hottest burlesque acts including, the fire-breathing Darcy D’Luxe and my own personal fave, the voluptuous Lelu Lenore (she had the best rump of the night).
But really, the main event of the night was the first official Miss Pin-up Philadelphia Pageant in which 10 contestants, dolled up in their best pin-up/vintage looks aimed to impress the panel of judges which included Jessica Lynn Gahring from TLC’s NY Ink. The winner received a pretty impressive prize package that included not only a free photo shoot with Celeste, but a spread in Retro Lovely Magazine, a billboard for The Old Sled Works and a rather snazzy custom crown from Venus in Chains.
The show’s host, the always entertaining, Candy Mayhem asked the ladies fun, simple questions to get a feel for their personalities. While it was fun to hear what they came up with on the spot, when the top three finalists were named, it became clear that personality really wasn’t a factor in the judging. (Contestant #10 was robbed! Just sayin.)
Regardless, kudos to Celeste for putting together such an extravagant production which I suspect was successful in raising a nice chunk of change for PFPB, a Philly-based non-profit which has spent the past seven years educating people about pit bull-type dogs across the country. The ladies in attendance also deserve props for having really taken the vintage attire recommendation to heart.
Here’s some of the sexiness you missed out on…
