Correct us if we’re wrong, but wasn’t Mad Decent’s Block Party a modest little free day of revelry in the Eraserhood back in the day? Something where hippies hula-hooped and neighbors barely approved? Well, now it’s a 13-city touring machine with more DJs, MCs and EDM sets than you can list in one breath—hell, eight breaths. It’s borderline ridiculous. However, if there’s one redeeming factor that could get us to attend, it’s Riff Raff. That dude rules.
Yes, the MDBP train rumbles through Philadelphia in a couple short weeks on Saturday, July 27th. The headliners are a half-dozen strong, it seems: MAJOR LAZER • DILLON FRANCIS • FLOSSTRADAMUS • RiFF RAFF • NADASTROM • DJ SEGA • DIRTY SOUTH JOE • SWIZZYMACK • JAHAN LENNON. Certainly a Major Lazer set would be hype, but again, we’d hope they’d do mostly Guns Don’t Kill People… tunes. With the exception of “Bubble Butt.”
There’s a damn trailer. It looks like skronky hedonism and rampant, heterosexual fist-pumping good times. A late-July all-day fest with little relief from the shade, DJ set after DJ set and a slew of up-and-coming emcees sounds like a mediocre time at best. Naturally, lots of bros will be blissing on molly, the festival drug du jour, pipes and joints’ll get smuggled in, and beers will hover around $10 a piece. We saw all of this last month at the Roots Picnic, and it wasn’t all that. But to behold that Riff Raff creep mumble his beautifully lazy rap game for a half-hour could be really fun. Tickets are $32 with a noon-time door opening.
Look at this damn trailer:
