Silly ski masks
For getting around in apocalyptic snow, we present a variety of silly ski masks:
Bruce Lee.
Doesn’t this look like it was knitted by an oddly malevolent grandma?
What To Do This Weekend
In reparation for the measly number of events we’ve been offering up as of late, its First Friday tomorrow and we’ve got a boatload of stuff for you to do.
At 4pm tomorrow, Art Star will be featuring the artwork of 7 year-old Lewis, amateur drawer and sculptor, already getting his foot in the door! Titled “Sea Monsters of Death”, the works will be for sale and benefit NLARTS, an organization offering arts programs in North Philadelphia. Not like Lewis needs them, clearly.

Pileggi Boutique is teaming up with Carmelita Couture for sales, champagne, and cupcakes starting at 5pm on Friday They’re offering 20% off all new merchandise (including brands like Jbrand, MZ Wallace handbags, and Genetic Denim), as well as a sale wall with 70% off. Bonus: The store will be contacting the boyfriends of any girls who attend and make a wishlist. If they come into the store and purchase something off the list the following week, it’s 20% off. Not that they should need an impetus…but it sure helps.

From 6-9pm, Arcadia will be hosting a joint event—a Bird Queen jewelry trunk show as well as new artwork by Rene Micheli. Both Bird Queen designer Gretchen Diehl and Rene will be on hand that night, as well as DJ JHNRDN. All clothes, including sale apparel, will be an extra 25-50% off, and all sale shoes are marked down an additional 50%.

Smak Parlour is pre-gaming the Valentine’s Day fun on Friday with a Fun with Cupid party at their Old City store. Lingerie from Honeydew, Mary Green, and Carrie Amber will be buy one get one free, and makeup from The Balm is half off. DJ The Most will be spinning, and the gals who run the store will be serving up “Love Potion Shots”, which, when asked what they were, were described as “A secret mixture, but we can tell you it will include vodka— and its sure to get you that guy!!
” Just heightening my curiosity, is all.

On Saturday, from 5-7pm, Group M will be hosting an opening reception for their newest exhibit David Goerk: Drawings. Goerk’s work has been featured in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as across the country and abroad. Below, one of his pencil and color pencil drawings.

Now through Saturday, Third Street Habit is pushing the last of their winter merchandise in a Season Finale Sale. Take an additional 25% off of brands like Rag & Bone, Dolce Vita, and Ella Moss. (And then we can finally get ready for spring!)
And if all of this winter-clearance-shopping and art-show-attending hasn’t completely exhausted you, Ju Ju Salon is hosting a relaxing Qigong session on Sunday morning at 9:30 (every first Sunday of the month, for the record.) Googling pictures and reading their online description sort of leads me to believe it is a lot like yoga, but more focused on energy levels and the medicinal benefits of working out. Sounds like an interesting alternative..

This could be you.
Hopefully this post is not all for naught via the heavy boatload of snow we are apparently receiving tonight. Everyone stay safe, keep warm, and drink lots of hot chocolate!
Sweet Treats

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, Daily Candy has some suggestions. Their slide show, 19 Gifts for Your Valentine features some pretty cool stuff including these vintage Mexican valentines. A not so romantic gift idea? This key chain that makes toilet flush sounds.
If you’d rather make up stories about Valentine’s Day, feel free to submit your ideas to the Coach website.
If you’re looking for a gift to give yourself, Bloomingdale’s currently has a pretty awesome Clinique Bonus.
In addition to having her own series that we covered earlier this week called Kell On Earth, Kelly Cutrone also released a new book called If You Have to Cry, Go Outside: And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You. This Elle article also mentions that she used to read tarot cards in Venice Beach and Los Angeles, and still gets occasional requests from people to give glimpses into their future.
MAC Cosmetics has always had makeup for every shade, but their new campaign All Ages, All Races, All Sexes includes products that promise to look good on everyone.
Lastly, Nylon has the lowdown on Dior’s new compact featuring Egyptian Hieroglyphs.
Not-boring red carpets

One of my myriad non-blogging jobs is (simplified explanation) messing with images in Photoshop so that they will print properly, and every time I have to tone a giant batch of awards-show red-carpet photos, it makes me more sympathetic to the outfits that show up under the next day’s “What were they thinking?” headline. Because I’m sitting there, and I’m Photoshopping an actress in a pretty, understated blue dress, Photoshopping a singer in a pretty, understated red dress, Photoshopping a celebrity in a pretty, understated black dress, Photoshopping… Lady Gaga wearing, like, a drag-queen Armani Sputnik or something and holding something that would not make it through airport security?
Who would get more male approval (well, also female approval, judging from all the WTF faces on women in the background of the above image)? Probably Taylor Swift. But who looks totally not boring? Lady Gaga.
In the same vein, Imogen Heap wore a dress that’s not particularly my cup of tea aesthetically, but is nevertheless pretty cool. There’s not a ton of pictures of it, because she won one of the boring awards they don’t show on TV, but the collar of her DIY dress has LED lights in it that scrolled messages tagged #twitdress from Twitter. The outfit also had a little purse-like box with what appears to be an iphone inside showing pictures that fans tagged #twitdress, as seen below:
Unfortunately, as with many things involving Twitter, most people seemed to miss the point of this a little, as there are a lot of “Cool dress!” and “I’m watching the Grammys!” and “Imogen Heap is awwwwesome congrats Immi!!!!” and links rather than, like, a well-timed “IMMA LET YOU LET YOU FINISH, BUT…”
But yes, give me Bai Ling and Kelis, give me Rihanna and Ciara, give me Kanye and Amber Rose, give me Bjork wearing a dead swan and MIA wearing a giant neon thing. Christ, at least they have some stones (figurative ones!) Because in the immortal words of Kanye West’s CAPS LOCK BLOG:
IT’S FUNNY TO ME WHEN FASHION BLOGGERS DOWN OUR OUFITS AND THEN SUPER JOCK OUTLANDISH shit ON THE RUNWAY BUT THEN THEY DRESS MAD PRUDE AND DON’T LIVE FASHION. WE LIVE IT MAN. FUCK THAT, WE LIVE IT!!! WE LIVE IT SO HARD PEOPLE LIVE THROUGH US! WE REPRESENT YOUR INNER SPIRIT!!
Well said, Kanye’s blog.
125 Years of Look Good Tips, Kell on Earth, RuPaul & more

Courtesy of Allure
The magazine that’s been around since 1885 has some tips for you. That’s right, Good Housekeeping’s website has 125 Years Of Look Good Tips listed. Some of them are pretty cool, including the older ones that still hold true – Motto for makeup: Use very little, but choose very well. — January 1933. Clearly, their advice has held up.
A new show made it’s debut last night on Bravo, called Kell on Earth. The show features Kelly Cutrone who can also be seen on MTV’s The City. One of our favorite bloggers, Lilliana Vazquez is a fan, and Bravo has more information on the show itself.
GQ has a bunch of Fall 2010 pictures on their website. In fact, they have everything from Armani to Zenga, including information on each designer. Nice.
Topshop is loving color, including looks from their Tropical Brights collection, Cosmo is into brights too, in eye makeup including rainbow shadow.
Lastly, Allure gives the scoop on RuPaul’s favorite beauty products.
No truth to rumors ANTM produced actual top model
Bummed that the rumors that Nicole Fox (who at 5′7″ easily won the “little tiny mini wee itty-bitty short girls” season of America’s Next Top Model last year) was going to be the face of Alexander McQueen’s spring/summer 2011 campaign have turned out to be bogus.
I mean, that’s not really surprising: There aren’t a ton of Top Models who have gone on to become, uh, top models. But I’m always so pleased when a dorky one wins! Well, in any event, she might be short, but she does now have legit photos not taken by Tyra Banks up in her portfolio at Wilhelmina (as seen above), and we’ll always have stilted, awkward pitches for Cover Girl to look forward to.
OH and speaking of ANTM where are they now? (that link is a treasure trove, btw) the best possible thing happened to pissy, annoying Christian Robin from the great first season: church hat modeling.
AWESOME!
What To Do This Weekend
Brutally cold, I know. Groundhog’s Day is almost here, however. Perhaps he’ll grant us some good news (that will finally provide impetus for me to remove myself from my comfy bed?)
Moving a couple doors down from her storefront on Fabric Row, Bus Stop Boutique’s Elena Brennan will be hosting her first Warehouse Sale all weekend at 727 S. 4th Street. A portion of the proceeds going to the American Red Cross Haiti fund and you’ll nab up to 75% off of the eclectic brands she stocks, including Lovely People, 80%20 and Bloch.

This weekend also sees the startup of Philagrafika 2010, an exhibition spanning art galleries across the city, displaying the use of printmaking processes in contemporary art. The Print Center will be hosting works from Space 1026 this Saturday from 2 to 5pm. The open house includes works from Sue Coe, Erick Beltran, and Dispatch. If you’re really into it, following the open house is a public reception at PAFA at 6pm. Admission is free.

In celebration of this year’s One Book, One Philadelphia choice, Persepolis (which I highly recommend), the Free Library is partnering with Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens to host a tour on Sunday where participants are also able to create their own illustrated mini-book. Stop by between 2 and 4pm for the tours. There’s still an admission (or rather, donation) fee, but after seeing these gardens and drawing a few pretty pictures, $4 ain’t lookin’ so bad.

You have to RSVP in advance to this one, and you’d be on the waiting list this week, but the Philadelphia area Stitch n’ Bitch is having a knitting meetup on Sunday from 1 to 6pm at one member’s house. The once-a-month get-togethers involve five hours of knitting, crocheting, or any other obscure weaving technique. This sounds like an excellent idea for future weekends, although I supposed whining about the State of the Union address will be old news at that point.
A Stitch n’ Bitch in Norway. This could be you.
From Miltary Jackets to An Orange Glow

Recently, we’ve been loving military jackets. Lucky for us, they’re everywhere. There’s this cute one from Express which will set you back about 80 bucks. There are also some wallet friendly alternatives from Forever 21 and H&M, whom as we’ve noted on our Twitter Page, do not have a website that features their inventory. We understand that their inventory varies greatly from store to store, and that they are a massive international company, but it would be nice to see something. Anything.
As we mentioned before, Liliana Vazquez, Cheap Chicas Founder and NBC10 Correspondent is currently guest blogging for Lucky Magazine. One of her posts is about things to get for Valentine’s day. As always, her suggestions are under $100. Pretty nice since some of those corsets can get expensive. Not that we’ve been looking..
We’re also loving what Alexa Chung is wearing, and so does InStyle. Something else on our radar, Urban Decay’s eyeshadow kit. It’s modeled to look like an Alice and Wonderland pop up book. Nice. Lastly, watch out if your trying to get a Snooki-esque tan, as tanning bed regulations may be coming soon.
Big In Japan
For a look at red carpet looks from the SAG Awards, check out Glamour’s recap. Rachel Zoe has a guide with 20 Not-So-Basic Wardrobe pieces. The LA Times has a recap of the drama that’s gone down between Rachel Zoe and her former assistant Taylor Jacobson.
We came across this blog: Kitten Lounge. We love that they have themes for what they feature every day – last week there were posts on lemon colored accessories, and Sunday there was a post on bringing spring into your home. This post features one of our loves, Gerbera Daisies, so we were fans from first glance.
According to US Magazine, Kourtney Kardashian is calling foul in regards to OK! Magazine’s statements about her post pregnancy body, further proving that photo shopping is out of control. It reminds us of that questionable picture of Demi Moore that W Magazine had on their cover a few months back.
NY Times‘ Bill Cunningham has spotted critters on NYC streets in the form of hats and other accessories. His observations are always so intriguing, though we haven’t run into him on his bicycle yet. We’re also big fans of NY Times‘ Style Magazine’s web layout. It doesn’t even matter what they’re covering, it’s gorgeous.
Lastly, The City’s Whitney Port is big in on the other side of the globe. Pretty cool to see her on the pages of Elle Girl Japan.
Rain Rain, Go Away
In addition to restaurant week, there’s another reason to get pumped about dining out this week. One of our favorite restaurants, Tiffin is working to raise money for Haiti. From today until January 31st, Tiffin will donate 3% of it’s sales revenue from all of it’s restaurants will to the American Red Cross Relief for Haiti.
In case you need a refresher, the chain has restaurants in Northern Liberties, Mount Airy, and Elkins Park, as well as their Tiffin Etc. location on Girard. The owner of the Tiffin resturants, Munish Narula will also match donations dollar for dollar if you’d like to give extra cash at any of the restaurants. Glamour also has a list of items from companies that are making donations to Haiti.
On the lighter side, Glamour has a slide show on their site featuring the latest nail trends, and I Heart Daily tells us about an iPhone app that turns your pictures into photo booth like creations.
