Some Super Fanciful Shoe Art

I never thought I would say this after my delayed trip to Cali, but I actually wouldn’t mind waiting in the terminal at the Philadelphia Airport, if only to admire local artist, Sharon Taffet’s jaw-dropping, embellished footwear.
Currently adding a whole lotta much-needed visual interest to Terminal D, “Fanciful Footwear” features a series of individual, store-bought shoes, each uniquely designed following a different theme. We’re talking heels and boots covered in everything from artificial fruit and foliage, playing cards and feathers to costume jewelry, shells and candy.
Katamari shoes at Bambi
Neato: The new show opening at Bambi Gallery this coming Friday (is it First Friday again already? Where does the time go?) is a selection of insane, campy sculptures that Sharon Taffett made out of Payless heels and a whole bunch of wickety-wack. The opening’s from 6-10, and Bambi describes some of the shoes thusly:
One shoe is completely covered in dime store candy while another is made from strand of gold and costume jewelry… [Taffett] delights in, and is fueled by, an almost compulsive need to make all things “pretty.”
OK, I can actually very much empathize with that, especially with the putting “pretty” in quotation marks. The shoe above does kind of look like it’s been rolled around by the teeny Prince of the Cosmos, amiright?
If you’re one of the unfortunates like myself who works Friday nights and never gets to do anything fun, the shoes will be up until December 27.

What To Do This Weekend
What isn’t there to do this weekend? Happy fall and happy First Friday!
//Kujo Lynx @ Bambi in the Piazza
Deep in the woods, near her aunt’s trailer, Kujo Lynx was born on Halloween, back when shape shifting didn’t demand a ten strip, just a few coyotes, a couple raccoons, and some moon-powered black lights. Some might regard Kujo Lynx as a nightshade of sorts; others just call her a friendship bracelet factory with a concentration in shamanism. Using reanimated rawhide and a million other multihued and recycled materials to describe a wilderness mottled by the vogue and the beautiful, Kujo Lynx is a taxidermist for the fiber optic generation. To put is simply, the most important thing to remember about Kujo Lynx; all the raves in the universe are just a pimple on her ass.
Well, when you put it like that… sheesh! Bambi gallery is showing works by Kujo Lynx! Join them on first Friday be prepared for a psychedelic shamanistic implosion of paintings drawings and installations.
Ed. note: Wear white– it’s a black light show!
The party goes down at The Piazza on 1001 North. 2nd St / #7 on Friday. More deets here.
//Fall Festival at Midtown Village This event, next to OutFest, is the single loudest celebration on my street all year… but nonetheless, a great party. It’s the day each fall where the (affectionately nicknamed) Gayborhood is taken over by karaoke, art, sumo wrestling (?!), face painting, a moon bounce and a performance by The School of Rock. The festival, which is all ages, starts on 13th and Sansom and is rain or shine. 12noon – 8pm; hope to see you there!
