What To Do This Weekend

From peaceful protest to critter crafts and chiptune music, here’s your weekend forecast for the humidity and the happenings:

Friday:

//Philly Tea Party (peaceful protest and discussion) in Rittenhouse Square I love the things you can find on CL– seriously! At first glance I thought people were bringing their spoons and saucers, but it turns out that this is actually a peaceful protest. If you’re interested in seeing what it’s all about, the deets are here.

Saturday:

//8Static at Studio 34 Not gonna lie, this is totally a plug for a personal fav. Support local music!

This month 8static is proud to present a special four musician lineup consisting ofCovox (Sweden),Nullsleep (NYC),Oxygenstar (CT), andRo-Bear (PHL).

Covox touches down in the US the day before and starts his tour right here in Philadelphia at 8static! Nullsleep returns from his worldwide Disaster Fetish tour in time to destroy 8static a second time! Oxygenstar, who previously played open mic and drums for minusbaby, is back for a full set! Finally, Ro-Bear, long time 8static open mic’er and up and coming Philly artist, makes his debut performance!

The fun starts at 45th and Baltimore at 8pm. Flyer for reduced admission here.

//Crafts for a Cause Oh man, I wish I had a pet. (For those of you who know me, you’re aware that I’ve actually settled for naming my houseplants.) There was a lovely little write up in City Paper about this sweet crafter celebration on Tuesday, but if you missed it here’s the scoop:

Citizens for a No Kill Philadelphia are bringing together more than three dozen crafters from the tri-state region to vend critter-friendly crafts. Awwww. There’ll be pets up for adoption from PAWS, a book signing and tunes, too. Local favs catFlowers and Steve Notich (above) will be showing, so be sure to swing by the Rotunda between noon and 6pm on Saturday tosee what it’s all about!

//End of Summer Sale at Oma Vintage We got an email from our girl Ada making sure we knew about the Dog Days party and sale at Oma Vintage.

As we all know, the summer is sadly coming to a close. So what better way to fight off those back-to-school blues than with a party and a sale? This Saturday night, all summer items at Oma Vintage will be 20-40% off. One night only! Drinks and treats will be served.
The party starts at 6pm, goes until 9pm and will be at 716 N 3 Street. More deets here.

Sunday:

//Blue Oce’ana to benefit The Ocean Project If you’re into eco-conscious apparel, you’ve probably already heard about Sand Shack. We received an open invitation from noon to 5pm this coming Sunday at Tierra Mia Organic Nail Spa on south 17th Street… There’s going to be cocktails and ..fake nails? Here are some deets:

Sand Shack and Tierra Mia Organic Nail Spa are joining forces for ocean conservation efforts in style. Recently named “2009 – Best of Philly”, Tierra Mia is Philadelphia’s premier hot spot for organic, eco-friendly salon experiences. We’re coming together for an afternoon of relaxation and appreciation. 5% of ALL jewelry sales and spa services will support The Ocean Project.

What To Do This Weekend

So Philly, how have you been? Have you recovered from last weekend’s hot dog and beer debauchery? Not really… but you’re looking forward to the weekend, anyway? Awesome– us, too!

This is the week that will be for crafters, sidewalk enthusiasts and all the people on the streets (dip-a-deeah-ep) because there seems to be quite a bit happening around the curbs this weekend (all of it legal, we swear).

Let’s start the weekend off riiiiiiiiight:

FRIDAY:

sign me the eff up!

bianca says "sign me the eff up for this!"

//Olde City Side Show at National Mechanics As a Philly Geek, I have a soft spot for National Mechanics. It’s truly the gem in the rocks in the scary-fake-tan-I-go-to-Penn-State-and-my-stepdad-is-wicked-rich land…. also known as Old City on the weekends. I was tipped off about the Olde City Side Show– check the deets here.

“Macabre, stomach turning and terror inducing are words that aptly describe the acts of the Old City Sideshow, but the acts themselves make their verbal counterparts mere shadows in perspective. Fire breathing, sword swallowing and glass eating, all accompanied by creepy organ music, are only some of the twisted acts that you can witness this Friday at National Mechanics.”

//War Games at The Magic Gardens See the screening of the 1983 cult favorite “War Games” and discuss the movie with the lovely people of PNA and Ban All Nukes Generation. Show starts at 7pm sharp at the Magic Gardens on South Street. Also, you get to see me dress up in a cardboard nuclear warhead costume…. True story: that’s yours truly (above) in a nuke suit with Kim-Thao Nguyen, PNA’s Assistant Director for Programming, hugging me.

SATURDAY:

//SugarHabit hosted by Sugarcube and Third Street Habit featuring Reward Boutique

ANNOUNCING:  The SugarHabit Warehouse Sale – featuring Reward Boutique.
WHEN: Saturday, July 11th from 10 am until 7 pm
WHERE: Shirt Corner Plus, located at 3rd and Market Streets in Old City, Philadelphia

//catFlower’s BOWner Party at Bob & Barbara’s Craft Fair So you may have read that B&B’s holds down a craft fair on the weekends here or here … but did you know that PW Style/ ETSY darlings catFlowers will be there this weekend? Along with other local crafter friends (including jewelry by Leah Coonan and Jonelle Greene of Greenehouse Productions), catFlowers will be hosting a “BOWner Party” where everything has a bow on it, is totally adorable and is under $10 bucks. I can support this. Set up is in front of B&B’s on 15th and South, and will out from 11am-5pm.

//Summer Sale at Grasshopper “Our Annual Summer Clearance Sale starts Saturday July 11. All spring and summer clothing & accessories will be marked down to up to 60% off. During the weekend we will also offer 25% off all accessories.”

//Cardboard Tube Duel by the Art Museum Yes, you read that right, and you will know where to find me and the boys of Geekadelphia.com Saturday afternoon. I’ll be in the sweet cardboard shoulder piece with a G3EK shield. Deets here and here.

SUNDAY:

//Punk Rock Flea Market Has it seriously been six months since the last one? I like good ol’ Sean Agnew and the goodies I’ve found at the PRFM… so if you aren’t totally exhausted from your awesome weekend I’ve provided you with, get some brunch and head toward the Starlight Ballroom. Deets here.

Forgive me: I once feared the headband.

Dear Headband,

I owe you an apology: I’m sorry I bashed you in my teenage years… but understand– you really used to scare me. I now know that it wasn’t you, and that other people were abusing you for years (including Rambo, and that must have been rough). You’ve always been there for me– you helped pull my hair back when I went running and helped me avoid exploiting my sad, sad ponytail to the public. I’m glad that you are out there in the open and people are once again embracing you.

Sincerely,
Bianca

PS: You are lookin’ gooood these days!

I think almost every girl I know had owned at least one headband by age 12. I initially avoided them for years because my mother gave me a case of hair-accessory trauma by wearing a mane clip during my adolescence. (For those of you not familiar with this treacherous follicle device that was popular in the 80’s and early 1990’s, click here and understand why I was so stressed when she used to pick me up from school.)

Other sources of hairband stress:

Fortunately for society, people don’t seem to abuse their hair accessories the way they did when I was growing up, and there are suddenly tons of cute headband/ barrettes styles and trends popping up. Thankfully, I saw the light when I cut my elbow length brown hair into an auburn bob, bought several and now have a blossoming hair accessory collection.

Instead of swarming Urban for an overpriced quirky piece– and if you aren’t up for the DIY route– do yourself a favor and browse ETSY for something unique. Currently, two local gals are hand-stiching their way to my heart with some adorable bow bands. Cat and Michelle are making fun, feminine hairwear (and earrings) available for the public soon with the upcoming launch of their ETSY store, catFlowers.

Here’s a preview:

All of the pieces above were entirely handstitched and created with elastic, sewn fabric flowers and leaves, vintage floral fabric and thread. I’m a fan. Be sure to follow them on twitter (@catFlowers) to see snaps of new projects and updates!
