What looks to be an awesome moving away sale

Bridget Pizzo, a Philly-area photographer and stylist, was recently featured on Apartment Therapy for the extremely awesome rehab she did of her grandparents’ old house:

And when you check out her flickr photostream, because she documented the entire rehab in photos, there’s also an album with hundreds of pictures entitled “Lots and Lots for Sale” in which you can find normal stuff like wireless routers and vacuums that people need to sell when they move away interspersed with several of the furniture pieces seen in the rehab photoset, including the black-and-white chairs above. Oh, man, I covet this mirror and chair:

Her contact information’s on her website and blog.

WTF is this amazing sparkly thing at Uhuru?

I love Uhuru, the used-furniture store at 12th and Spruce, and thought I’d put it out there as a public service for anyone looking for cheap furniture but unwilling to venture outside to browse that they have a blog, which they update pretty frequently with new stuff that is donated.

Although I’ve done quite a bit of browsing at Uhuru during my time in Philly, and while I’ve seen a lot of neat chairs and couches and tables, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this completely insane sparkly thing, which they appear to have just gotten in. Here is Uhuru’s description:

This etegiere is super awesome.
The prisms are great and the detail is super funky.
This thing is definitely older.
There is a matching hanging lamp with electrical already supplied.
Seriously, you will be the only person you know that has this.
Call for price of etegiere and lamp.

Oh, price on request, eh? And they are correct: I have never met anyone who owns this particular piece of furniture. The closest thing I can find on M-W is

Main Entry: éta·gère

a piece of furniture consisting of a set of open shelves for displaying small objects and sometimes having an enclosed cabinet as a base.

It also comes with some sort of chandelier lamp, which must attach somewhere above where the picture ends. I kind of want to wander over there today and figure out how this thing fits together before someone with a taste for the sparkles gets it.

this week in craigslist furniture

Craigslist furniture: for sale by owner is always an interesting place to look around. You can find some good stuff, but you almost always sort through a whoooooole lot of crap before you find that wonderful whatever it is you need. The crap generally makes up about 95% of the listings, and generally fall into either the category “hideous” or “overpriced” or somewhere in the Venn diagram overlap of the two.

We’ve filtered them into three streams: the good, the ugly and the hilariously overpriced. For you! We do this all for you! This week: Puppy pillows, your racist lighting options and a $13,200 desk.

The good:

Ooh, this vanity is on the pricey side, but it’s one of the few antiques I think would actually be worth the sticker price. That shiz is gorgeous. White vintage vanity, $395, Delco.

Like a fat kid loves cake

Just off City Ave is my personal wonderland, Material Culture. Maybe you’ve been? In a converted train garage, the warehouse-like space is packed to the gills with antique and vintage pieces from India, China, Indonesia, Turkey, Kazakhstan and beyond.  Inside you’ll find unique items for all aspects of an interesting home; lighting, furniture, doors, rugs, textiles, copper table tops, and wall moldings (to name a few).

This week, I was trolling the rows of treasures on behalf of a client.  She needs a tall piece to house her TV and other media components.  Of course, they’ll all take a bit of carpentry tinkering to make them flat TV and cable box ready, but they’ll also add so much character to her Old City loft space. Here are some of the finds I’ll be showing her.

I’d really love to turn this pair of doors into a custom media cabinet.  It is particularly great because the doors are wide enough to accomodate a larger flat screen TV but when building out the cabinet it could be made shallow so as not to take over the room.

Let me brick it down for you…

John Houshmand’s White Brick club chair is featured in September’s Trend Watch in Metropolitan Home magazine.

I’m very drawn to this chair; it’s so Ready Made chic. And although the chair lists for $21, 875 it is a very accessible piece of high design for any of those true DIYers out there. Philadelphia DIYers especially, since a pair of these club chairs would look so fab in a South Philly “backyard” (read: concrete slab). Imagine how charming these would be after a few seasons when moss finally creeps up the sides! My design daydreams are getting the best of me. It’s time for you to get to work and do your lincoln-log best at brick laying your way to a new living room set.

Craigslist: One Man’s Trash…

Craigslist Finds

Craigslist is a crapshoot; scammers abound and clicking on product titles reveals a different sort of item entirely.

This is not shabby chic.

And these are not neutral.

But sometimes your wounded heart takes a shot at love and clicks on the hundredth “Danish Modern” furniture listing. AND YOU HIT THE MOTHERLOAD!

Although the listing has since disappeared into Craigslist’s abyss of used Ikea, I remember it clearly: “Danish Furniture Auction”. It lead to this site for Regal Auction Services, LLC. and, specifically, an upcoming auction for amazing Danish Modern furniture pieces.

On August 30th, these (among others) will be up for grabs:

One quick note before your heart swells with anticipation:

You’ll have to make a bid over the phone or make the trek to New Hampshire to attend the auction. Hey, it’s Craigslist. There’s always a catch!
