Terrific Tuesday

Courtesy of Self.com

We heard that a certain famous Victoria’s Secret model straightens her hair with embalming fluid. Sorry, we’re still absorbing this information.  Apparently it’s popular in Brazil. Hearing things like this only make us want to see Chris Rock’s Good Hair even more.

On an unrelated note, it looks The Frisky found one of like Marc Jacobs’ has creations – a bracelet with animals charms, that DOESN’T cost an arm and a leg. Nice. NBC10’s Lilliana Vazquez highlight cute shoes from different price ranges.

Self.com lets you guess what the beauty product does as well as highlights the best trends in color for the fall – that’s nail polish, eye shadows and neon headbands. All this while Teen Vouge teaches you how to create looks featured on the website yourself.

Happy Friday!

Muscely football player types have problems finding pants sometimes. Men’s pants are either euro tight or prison pants baggy, with no in between. A company that was featured on the Today Show this morning, Bonobos is trying to change all that. So, if there’s a boy in your life that can’t seem to find pants that fit correctly, head on over to their site. Their video explaining their mission is pretty amusing as well.

Oprah Magazine is on the lookout for ill-fitting garments as well. This slide show focuses on getting rid of that dreaded visible panty line. Ew.

Stylist to the stars Rachel Zoe has a daily newsletter that highlights her favorite picks. While many of the selections are high end – a recent newsletter featured an Anna Sui Dress for $650 – it also features a ‘Parallel Universe’ section that points it’s way to a cheaper but still cute version. In this aforementioned recent newsletter, an Anna Sui dress from the target collection for $45 was featured. You can sign up for updates on Rachel’s website, which also shares everything you need to know about Rachel, such as the fact that she’s sick after Fashion Week in NYC and what songs are on her iTunes playlist. Perhaps it’s this recent article in New York magazine that’s got Rachel feeling rundown and sick?

Headbands created by students at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising (LIM) were featured in a recent I Heart Daily Post. These young entrepenuers made and started wearing their creations. It wasn’t long until classmates were asking where they could get cute accessories like they had, and Stella Accessories was born.

NBC10’s website has some pictures of celebs that look alike, naked PETA ads, and the new school nameplate necklace. We’re fans – since these new school necklaces don’t feature your entire name, there won’t be any awkward moments where random people know your name. It’s happened to us. We swear.

Forgive me: I once feared the headband.

Dear Headband,

I owe you an apology: I’m sorry I bashed you in my teenage years… but understand– you really used to scare me. I now know that it wasn’t you, and that other people were abusing you for years (including Rambo, and that must have been rough). You’ve always been there for me– you helped pull my hair back when I went running and helped me avoid exploiting my sad, sad ponytail to the public. I’m glad that you are out there in the open and people are once again embracing you.

Sincerely,
Bianca

PS: You are lookin’ gooood these days!

I think almost every girl I know had owned at least one headband by age 12. I initially avoided them for years because my mother gave me a case of hair-accessory trauma by wearing a mane clip during my adolescence. (For those of you not familiar with this treacherous follicle device that was popular in the 80’s and early 1990’s, click here and understand why I was so stressed when she used to pick me up from school.)

Other sources of hairband stress:

Fortunately for society, people don’t seem to abuse their hair accessories the way they did when I was growing up, and there are suddenly tons of cute headband/ barrettes styles and trends popping up. Thankfully, I saw the light when I cut my elbow length brown hair into an auburn bob, bought several and now have a blossoming hair accessory collection.

Instead of swarming Urban for an overpriced quirky piece– and if you aren’t up for the DIY route– do yourself a favor and browse ETSY for something unique. Currently, two local gals are hand-stiching their way to my heart with some adorable bow bands. Cat and Michelle are making fun, feminine hairwear (and earrings) available for the public soon with the upcoming launch of their ETSY store, catFlowers.

Here’s a preview:

All of the pieces above were entirely handstitched and created with elastic, sewn fabric flowers and leaves, vintage floral fabric and thread. I’m a fan. Be sure to follow them on twitter (@catFlowers) to see snaps of new projects and updates!
