What To Do This Weekend
Philly, oh Philly– You’ve had a bender the past two weekends with festival after festival around every corner. That’s what we love about you! This weekend appears to be a wee bit more relaxing in the City of Brotherly Love; It seems all the fashionistas in town are kicking it low key. Most of us have off for Memorial day, and for many, the first hamburger off the grill signifies that summer has come. Ahhh.
So what if it might rain– go to a friend’s BBQ or mom and dad’s summer home! If not, here are some things to check out in town:
//Friday
Star Trek: The Exhibition at The Franklin Since the release of the newest movie, the nerds of the world are rejoicing: the people of the world are suddenly very, very cool with Star Trek! The cool new exhibit opened last weekend at The Franklin; if you missed it, there’s no time like the present to check out it out! Tickets can be bought here.
Philadelphia Harp Festival If coronas and hot dogs don’t cut it for you, check out the Philadelphia Harp Festival. It sounds ever-so-slightly bizarre, and the it’s taking place down the street from my house at the Church of St. Luke and The Epiphany so I may just have to check it out.
//Saturday
Bryn Mawyr Farmers Market Here’s your chance to get those veggies for the grill this weekend and to get fresh at the market.
“The farmers’ market season kicks off on Saturday, May 23 from 10am – 2pm with fresh food and community fun. The market will be open every Saturday thereafter, rain or shine, through the fall. A delicious diversity of locally-grown or produced food items will be available – vegetables, fruits, meats, cheeses, breads – come and purchase the ingredients for an entire summer meal!
Our Opening Day celebration will include prize giveaways from local businesses, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a native plant sale from the Lower Merion Conservancy, and much more . . . bring your kids for a fun day that is not to be missed.”
Yard Sales in the Suburbs According to the internetz, yard saling is where it’s at this weekend! I praised my flea market love, but I don’t think I’ve mentioned the sweet amount of yard sales that happen right outside the city. People seem to be doing some serious spring cleaning, so check out the listing of Philly ‘burb sales here.
//Sunday

Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Just because I’m afraid of clowns dosen’t mean you have to be. It’s yet again that time of year– the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey are baaaa-accck. The circus is happening all weekend in South Philly at the Wachovia Spectrum. Get tix here!
Starfleet Style: the new Star Trek
Like any good geek, this past Friday I went to see the new Star Trek movie; I really enjoyed it! I’m not going to spoil the plot if you’re planning to go see it, but I will say there was quite a bit of polyester involved.
The nerd in me would like to give props to the costuming department for updating the Starfleet uniform so nicely into the 21st century… then the rest of me tells the nerdy part to shut up and to just enjoy how damn good Zachary Quinto looks in it– even if he has pointy ears.
But really, trekkies –for better or worse– are some of the most observent people on the planet. The fans who re-create the props and costumes are so detail oriented they put the masses to shame. So, I wonder how they would feel if they noticed a few pieces for the Spring/Summer 2009 runway that appear to have some old school Trek inspired pieces?
Key elements in the retro space-style seem to be high necklines, interesting texture and primary colors.
Not to mention… the new cast is hot! Check out Zoe Saldana, the new Lieutenant Uhura, rocking the premiere in this Prabal Gurung get-up.
And the new Spock, Zachary Quinto, graced GQ magazine last month, modeling raincoats.
Joie de Vivre
I’ll be honest. I had no idea that the premier of Star Trek was going to be such a big deal. Apparently, it was a huge deal. Amongst those on the red carpet was Hayden Panettiere, who was rocking some new ink. Supposedly, Hayden had a tattoo of the word vivre – ‘to live’ in French, and has expanded upon it. I can’t quite make out what the entire tattoo says. Can you?
Cosmo has compiled a list of 100 products that celebs swear by, while People.com has a slideshow featuring links to inexpensive options to ‘recreate the look.’
Also Paula Abdul performed last week on Idol, which I’d have to say was better than expected. However, BET points out, not many people actually want to see her make a comeback. Do you? Do you care?
