What To Do This Weekend

//catFlowers at Crafty Balboa While digging around on Indie Craft Shows, I discovered our fav ladies, catFlowers, will be hanging out in South Philly on Saturday with their hand-made, cat-themed pillows, and accessory/ jewelry collection. Add Crafty Balboa as a friend on facebook for more deets!

//FrankenFestival at the Adrienne This awesome show runs until Monday 9/14 at the Adrienne. There are plenty of deets here and here, but I have to say this blurb does it no justice compared to my own review:

FrankenFestival is a collection of four titillating, bizarre, and downright hilarious ten-minute monster plays stitched together and violently shocked to life. A must see for fans of B-Horror films and outrageous comedy.

My review: Um, all you really need to know is that they have a Sasquatch in space, people are afraid of pennies and someone wears an Ikea clock as an accessory. It’s awesome. Seriously.

//GreenFest Philly Street Fair I’m super proud to be participating in this year’s event! Remember the call for artists for B.A.N.G.’s Fringe Festival event, Atomic Catwalk? Well, GreenFest Philly will be showing some of our disarmament couture during the day! The picture below is a snap of my NPT Globe Dress on my lovely model, Katie.

What To Do This Weekend

Happy First Friday! It’s *fingers crossed* not raining yet… and there’s plenty of time to paint the town this weekend. First things first– here’s the weather!

FRIDAY:

//8bit & Beyond Gallery at Brave New Worlds Comic Book Shop I love the kids over at Brave New Worlds on 2nd street. Their First Friday events are always a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to seeing the 8bit & Beyond show tonight! Event opens at 6pm. Thanks to Geekadelphia.com for the info and Juanma from The Autumn Society for this sweet promo image.

//Ferris Bueller’s Day Off at The Piazza at Schmidt’s It would appear the sad news about John Hughes made it’s way to the Northern Liberties, and the folks at the Piazza are paying their respects all day to the man that brought us Sixteen Candles and Home Alone.

//UHURU Flea Market at Clark Park I’m a fan of UHURU. I’m a fan of flea markets. I’m a fan of Clark Park (ice cream, LARPers and all!)… so naturally I’m 300% about this spring-summer-fall happening on 43rd & Baltimore. Deets here. OH! aaaand I heard a rumor our friends catFlowers may even be there.

//Sale at Art Star Philly So, you probably know Art Star Philly if you’re a PWstyle reader. I mean, we love their gigantic craft bazaar in the spring and their store on 2nd street… so of course we follow them on twitter, which was where we found out those deets posted above.

SUNDAY:

//MakePhilly Bottlerocket BBQ Make Philly, The Hacktory and Hive 76 provide Philly with a lot of DIY fun… so I’m not surprised to hear that they’re having an awesome potluck-bbq-DIY-make-stuff-fly day. Here’s some deets I stole from their site:

Come on our for our 3rd annual MakePhillly potluck BBQ and shoot some WATER ROCKETS with us!

Bring food! Brink drink! Have a grill? Bring it! As has become tradition, we’re going to be holding a potluck BBQ and launching water rockets.  Water rockets are made from plain old soda bottles which are filled half way with water and then pressurized with a bicycle pump.  Pimp your water rocket out with fins, colors, and bedazzle.

It’s super easy to make one…. check out how here: http://www.instructables.com/id/Water_Rocket/
IMPORTANT:  We will not launch anything that burns, explodes, or uses any fuel other then water and compressed air.  No bottle rockets, no potato cannons, etc.  We will be in a public park, and we need to make sure things stay safe!

What To Do This Weekend

Friday

Opening of Skin & Bones at the Independence Seaport Museum

Hold tight there, homeboy. Before you go running off willy-nilly to Philadelphia Eddie’s or Moo Tattoo, hoping to brand your old lady with a tramp stamp, you might want to swing by the Independence Seaport Museum and spend some quality time with “Skin & Bones,” a thorough exhibit of the American sailor tattoo tradition. It’s quite likely you’ll develop an appreciation for the late-18th-century sea bees who introduced the tattoo habit to American shores. Dan Eldridge

Head Over Heels: Bus Stop’s Second Birthday Bash

Believe it or not, it’s only been two years since Elena set up shop on Fourth Street. Tonight, help her celebrate the store’s second birthday with complimentary cupcakes and champagne while browsing to the sounds of British DJ Undr. Added bonus: At this birthday party, you don’t bring the gifts. Each purchase will be rewarded with a free Maybelline Lash Stiletto Mascara.

Saturday

Fishtown Shadfest

Sexy young vectors of gentrification should be excited to see that their mighty beer dollars have stimulated the meta-local economy to the point that the Fishtown Area Business Association—the fab FABA to I-so-totally-bought-my-house-here-10-years-ago insiders—is proudly trumpeting the “first annual Shad Festival featuring the Shad Fish that was once so important to this area’s economy.” Shad are river herring that way-back settlers relied on for brain food until their fishing exceeded the shad’s breeding. But thanks to FABA, Shad Fest shall rage on to celebrate yesteryear’s fish in the town of tomorrow. The Fest features a 5K run organized by the Fishtown Beer Runners, craft vendors, assorted stabs at irony (“valet bike parking”) and a soundtrack featuring rootsy revivalists Hoots & Hellmouth and the ever-sterling Gildon Works. Shad foodstuffs will be served by JB’s, Standard Tap and Sweet Lucy’s BBQ. BYO Fishtown briefcase. Tara Murtha

Save the Whales by Shopping!

With the current economy, shopping in thrift stores isn’t just trendy—it’s necessary. And in case that wasn’t enough to convince you, dropping dimes at Buffalo Exchange this weekend will help save the whales. Literally. In honor of Earth Day, all proceeds from Buffalo Exchange’s Dollar Day Sale will benefit the Humane Society of the United States. The more you spend, the more you save.

Britney Bash

Once you’ve honored the fish and saved the whales, head to Silk City to shake your hips at DJ Deejay’s Britney Bash. Because, seriously, is there anyone out there who doesn’t have a special place in their heart for the struggling pop star?

Sunday

Fairmount Arts Crawl

While Fairmount doesn’t have the bohemian cred of Northern Liberties or Fishtown, the neighborhood does support the arts. Each year, the Fairmount Arts Crawl showcases the work of local artists in neighborhood businesses. The event began five years ago when a group of people—both artists and business owners—felt there was nowhere to showcase local work. “This is a really good example of a community getting together without any city funding, just rallying around each other and creating this type of event,” says Crawl organizer Sharon Tice. The Arts Crawl showcases everything from painting and pottery to handmade crafts and jewelry in Fairmount businesses, including the Urban Saloon and Jack’s Firehouse. Anastasia Kotsosavas

What To Do Tonight: Baseball or Chocolate? The Eternal Question

If You Believe There’s No Crying In Baseball

Liza Goncalves and Michelle D’Avella, owners of Vintage Blue, a line of T-shirts inspired by the All-American Girls Baseball League (see: A League of Their Own), will be hanging out at Mikey’s American Grill and Sports Bar in University City between 5pm and 9pm tonight. They’ll be selling the latest Vintage Blue T-shirts (we dig this one) as well as offering designer jeans—including Joe’s, Citizens, James and People Liberation—for $50.

If You’re Craving Something Sweet

Eco-friendly boutique Arcadia hosts a wine and chocolate tasting tonight starting at 6pm. In addition to being able to indulge in sweet treats, guests can peruse the shop’s latest art opening which features the  photography of Alex Trejo as well as a trunk show featuring jewelry by Birdqueen Designs (fingers crossed she’ll bring along some of her adorable Yellow Owl collection). Anyone who  makes a purchase will be entered into a raffle. It’s a little pricey, but we’ve got our eye on this brown dress by Zula Studio.
